Tuesday Roundup: Aberdeen comeback falls short in 52-43 loss to Tumwater

Also: Free throws help Hoquiam edge Taholah; Raymond falls to Chief Leschi

An Aberdeen comeback attempt ran out of time in a 52-43 loss to Tumwater on Tuesday in Tumwater.

Aberdeen (5-1 overall, 2-1 2A Evergreen) suffered its first loss of the season after getting off to a slow start with just three points in the first quarter and six in the second to trail 19-9 at the half.

Aberdeen feel behind by as much as 18 in the third quarter before its found a rhythm, and the Bobcats began to make a comeback.

Maddie Gore and Jaylynn Phimmasone hit back-t0-back threes followed by two baskets from Marina Marll in the first three minutes of the fourth quarter to get Aberdeen back into the game.

The Bobcats trimmed the Tumwater lead to seven points with a minute to go in the fourth quarter, but eventually ran out of time in dropping the 2A Evergreen League contest.

“I was very proud of the whole team’s effort,” Aberdeen head coach Rachel Wenzel said. “I knew that we would be a little intimidated going in to this game and it showed for two and a half quarters. This is the first time in the 11 times (against Tumwater) in my five years that we’ve met that it was a fun game to coach. I told them it would be within 10 at the end, and it was. We will get another opportunity in January and we will be ready.”

Gore and Phimmasone led Aberdeen with 14 and 10 points, respectively.

Tumwater (5-0, 3-0) was led by Kylie Waltermeyer, who returned to the lineup to score a game-high 24 points.

Aberdeen will face Tenino in a non-league game at 7 p.m. Saturday in Tenino.

Hoquiam 54, Taholah 51

Hoquiam hit clutch free throws down the stretch to edge Taholah 54-51 on Tuesday at Taholah High School.

The Grizzlies (3-2) jumped out to an 18-9 lead at the end of the first quarter after seniors Graci Bonney-Spradlin, Ella Folkers and Chloe Kennedy combined to go 5-for-6 from the charity stripe and scored at least five points apiece in the period.

Hoquiam maintained its lead throughout the game until late in the fourth quarter, when Taholah (0-1) made a big run to trim the Grizzlies lead to 50-48 with under a minute to play.

Folkers hit a pair of free throws with 16 seconds left to put the Grizzlies up 52-48.

Taholah’s Kediana McCrory hit a three with six seconds left to give the Chitwhins a chance at 52-51.

Taholah then fouled Lexi LaBounty, sending the Grizzlies freshman to the free-throw line with 1.6 seconds left on the clock.

The freshman guard — who had not scored in the game — drilled two free throws to secure the 54-51 victory.

“Great team effort tonight against a very improved and tough-as-nails Taholah program,” Hoquiam head coach Chad Allan said. “Great basketball environment and the fans were great. Taholah made us better today. We are still learning a lot of lessons on our journey to become a better basketball program.”

Hoquiam was led by Folkers, who had what Allan called “a monster night” with 20 points, 10 rebounds and six steals.

Bonney-Spradlin (10 points, 6 steals), Ashlinn Cady (10 pts., 8 reb.) and Kennedy (9 pts., 7 reb., 3 blocks) also made significant contributions to the Hoquiam victory.

Hoquiam made 17-of-58 (29%) shots from the field and had 20 steals while committing 31 turnovers as a team.

Taholah’s Precious Crossguns scored a game-high 26 points.

“Precious Crossguns was a problem for us all night,” Allan said of the Taholah star.

Hoquiam will play at Ilwaco at 5:45 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 22.

Taholah takes on North River at 7 p.m. Wednesday at North River High School.

Chief Leschi 62, Raymond 46

Raymond couldn’t overcome some first-half woes in suffering a 62-46 loss to Chief Leschi on Tuesday in Puyallup.

The Seagulls (3-3, 1-2 2B Pacific) fell behind 14-8 after one quarter and dug itself a 37-19 halftime deficit as an inability get out on Chief Leschi shooters led to the Warriors hitting 12-of-20 (60%) shots in the the second frame, including four 3-pointers.

“We showed a lot of heart and determination tonight at Chief Leschi,” Raymond head coach Mike Tully said. “The second half, we did a better job of slowing things down on offense and playing tough defense. Hopefully we can learn from our mistakes and keep striving to improve.

Senior guard Morgan Anderson led Raymond with 24 points — 15 in the second half — to go along with 11 rebounds and two assists.

Raymond hosts Forks at 7:15 p.m. Thursday.
