Tuesday Prep Roundup: Hoquiam falls in districts to Castle Rock

Also: Aberdeen, Elma, Montesano all suffer first-round volleyball losses

It was a busy night for prep sports on the Twin Harbors Tuesday, with multiple teams competing in their respective district tournaments.

VOLLEYBALL

Castle Rock 3, Hoquiam 0

Castle Rock’s consistent outside hitting was too much for Hoquiam to overcome in a 3-0 loss in the opening round of the 1A District 4 Volleyball Tournament on Tuesday in Hoquiam.

Hoquiam (4-7) kept the match close but eventually fell to Castle Rock and its consistently strong outside-hitting game by scores of 26-16, 25-21 and 25-14.

The Rockets (8-2) hammered the ball consistently, totalling 28 kills as a team led by Brooke Wirkkala (12 kills) and Paige Kessler (10 kills).

Setter Ranae Holter led Castle Rock with 34 assists.

But in facing a heavy-hitting offensive opponent, Hoquiam didn’t back down. The Grizzlies had a whopping 58 digs as a team — led by libero Hailey Lawrence’s 16 digs — which often led to long rallies and extending points.

“I’m really proud of how we played. The one thing I was really happy with was the long rallies that we played. We won a lot of them. We had some really incredible, high-intensity rallies,” Hoquiam head coach Heather Bozich said. “It came down to some little things, little errors. And (Castle Rock’s) outside and middle hitters really crushed the ball.”

After dropping the first game, Hoquiam found itself trailing 16-11 in the second game before rallying to tie the score at 17-all on a kill from Sharaya Brydon.

But despite tying the game twice more and 19-19 and 20-all, Hoquiam could never get over the hump as Castle Rock won five of the game’s final six points to take the set 25-21.

In the third game, Castle Rock jumped out to a 4-0 lead until the Grizzlies roared back to within a point at 5-4 on a kill from Chloe Kennedy. But Castle Rock quickly regained a multi-point lead that extended to double-digits before winning the set 25-14.

“I’ve got some extremely young girls on the team and they held their own. I thought once we kind of figured out where they were hitting, they stepped in and they didn’t back down,” Bozich said. “When you are playing a team of that caliber, (the Rockets) know how to switch it up. It’s a chess match and (Castle Rock) played a really good match.”

Ella Folkers led Hoquaim with 14 assists to go along with four digs. Kennedy led the Grizzlies with seven kills with Brydon contributing five kills and 11 digs.

Hoquiam’s Carron Blood (8 digs) and Kamryn Krohn (7 digs) also had solid defensive performances for the Grizzlies, which will host Tenino at 6 p.m. Thursday in the consolation round.

“La Center just had too many weapons tonight,” Montesano head coach Pat Pace said. “Our front row did their best with Addie Winter leading our offensive attack, but La Center just pounded the ball at us. The back row was very busy.”

Winter had six solo blocks while Myah Gallinger led Monte with 25 assists and 10 digs.

GIRLS SOCCER

Tumwater 3, Aberdeen 0

Despite the brilliance of Bobcats goal keeper Char Gutierrez, Aberdeen fell to Tumwater 3-0 in the quarterfinal round of the 2A District 4 Girls Soccer Tournament on Tuesday in Tumwater.

Gutierrez kept Aberdeen (7-6) in the game after a deflected Tumwater shot gave the Thunderbirds a 1-0 lead 20 minutes into the game.

Gutierrez made a 1-on-1 save late in the first half to keep the score at 1-0 at halftime, made another stellar save 10 minutes into the second half, and blocked a penalty kick later in the half to keep the Aberdeen deficit at 1-0.

Tumwater was able to break down Aberdeen’s defense and scored two goals midway through the second half to pick up the 3-0 victory and advance to the semifinal round.

“The girls gave a lot of effort and never quit, but were just outmatched by the excellent ball control of the T-birds,” said Aberdeen head coach Larry Fleming, who noted the hustle of seniors Emma Green, Elizabeth Martinez, Brooklynn Lecomte and Logan Glanz.

The season marked the first time this current group of Bobcats seniors finished the season with a winning record, going 8-8 last season and 5-10 in 2018.

Tumwater 1 2 — 3

Onalaska 2, Ocosta 1

Ocosta’s impressive season ended on Tuesday with a 2-1 loss in a 2B District 4 semifinal match-up against Onalaska in Onalaska.

Ocosta (9-3) fell behind by a goal after a rebound was knocked in by the Loggers in the 33rd minute.

The Wildcats responded five minutes later when Kylee Denny scored on a shot to the upper right corner after receiving a drop pass from Ryann Raffelson.

An Onalaska breakaway gave the Loggers the 2-1 advantage in the 56th minute.

“That was the first breakaway goal we gave up this season,” Ocosta head coach Mike King said. “(Ocosta goal keeper) Devyn (Martin) got her hand on it but it snuck in just inside the right side of the goal.”

With 12 minutes to go, Ocosta had a golden opportunity to tie the game on a breakaway, but a shot was misfired and the Wildcats season ended with the 2-1 loss.

“Both teams brought their A-game and we don’t back down to anyone when it comes to physical play,” King said, adding Ocosta lost three starters and received three yellow cards in the physical match while Onalaska avoided being carded.

King cited seniors Martin, Raffelson, Maia Soderlund and Abriana Ness for outstanding leadership and fine play this season.

“I’m proud of the way the girls played this year and how they were in every game,” he said. “I’m looking forward to the return of fall season.”

BOYS GOLF

Tumwater 216, Aberdeen 235

Aberdeen struggled to find much success in a 216-235 loss to Tumwater on Monday at Grays Harbor Country Club.

“We knew we had to play our best golf against Tumwater. It was one of those matches where nothing seemed to go as planned. Drives weren’t finding the fairway, approach shots were just missing the green and putts weren’t finding the cup,” Aberdeen head coach Dan Sundstrom said.

The Bobcats were led by Nolan King, who shot a 41 for his 9-hole round.

Logan Seguin (44) and Trevon Nichols (46) recorded scores below their season averages for Aberdeen.

“I would like to thank my players, parents, GHCC and my assistant coach Brian King,” Sundstrom said after the final match of the season.
