Elma 3, Montesano 0

Elma got another solid, all-around match out of Jalyn Sackrider in the Eagles’ 3-0 home win over Montesano on Tuesday night.

Elma (7-2, 3-0 Evergreen 1A) won the match 25-17, 25-16 and 25-20 with the Bulldogs coming on strong in the last set of the match. Along with Sackrider’s match-leading 15 kills and four blocks, the Eagles also benefited from Quin Mikel’s 20 digs and eight kills.

Eagles head coach Kendra Dunn said the team’s ability to scramble around on defense made the difference when the games were close.

“They had some amazing ups and never quit. They kept on fighting. Jalyn (Sackrider), Ella (Moore) and Kayla (Aho) all had great ups,” she said. “It was definitely a major team effort and everyone really did their part tonight.”

Monte (7-1, 1-1) had trouble generating enough offense to keep up with the Eagles as the Bulldogs were led by freshman McKynnlie Dalan’s six kills.

Elma, which had 66 digs as a team, also impressed Montesano head coach Pat Pace, who said he’d like his team to play with the same defensive intensity.

“I got to hand it to Elma, it is really tough to beat a team that is so willing to lay out on the floor and make all the holes shrink,” he said. “They did a fantastic job. Any bumps and bruises they have after this game, they earned them. If we’re going to beat Elma, we’re going to need to play like that.”

Elma briefly trailed 11-7 in the first set but, rallied to score six of the next eight points to retake the lead after Dunn called a timeout.

Montesano also made things close in the final set and pulled within two points and trailed 20-18 before Elma rallied again to put the match away.

Pace said his team needs to improve on passing in those critical moments.

“In that very first game when we had the lead, then we couldn’t pass the ball,” he said. “There are a lot of things to take away from this, both good and bad. We’ll start preparing for them for when we play them at our place.”

Before the two teams meet again, Montesano will take on Forks at home at 7 p.m. on Wednesday. Elma will also play Forks in their next match on the road at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 15.

Dunn said her team is feeling good in advance of its match against Forks and said she enjoyed the display her players put on.

“It was definitely a big test for us and I’m really proud with how they responded,” she said. “They just kept on fighting and kept pushing. They’re my favorite team to watch and I’ve got the best seat in the house, which is fun.”

“When we played them over at Ocosta (in a non-league match on Sept. 17) we went to five games with them, but we were trying some different things and we ironed some things out,” Hodel said. “I had a feeling we were going to take away this win. We’ve just been working hard on trying to keep getting better every single game and I think we’ve been doing that thus far. We know how good Ocosta’s program is and we were definitely excited to get the win.”

Ocosta (5-2, 1-1) was led by Layne Martin’s 13 kills and 18 digs while setter Emily Snider recorded 28 assists in the contest.

Lillyan Barnum added eight kills, 23-for-24 service and four aces for Ocosta.

Raymond 3, South Bend 0

Raymond won its second straight game to open its league schedule as the Seagulls downed South Bend in straight sets on Tuesday at South Bend High School.

The Seagulls won 25-10, 25-16 and 25-12.

“We had a good night serving and attacking the ball,” Raymond head coach Bob Swogger said. “We had too many free balls the first set but were able to cut down that number a lot in the second and third sets.”

Tina Sypaphay led Raymond (4-3, 2-0 Pacific 2B) with seven kills and six aces.

Grace Busenius added five kills and Destiny Souvannanh and Hannah Miller had four kills apiece for Raymond.

South Bend (0-7, 0-2), a young team with one junior and no seniors on its roster, was led by freshman Makaylee Kuiken’s seven digs and sophomore Reece Williams’ four blocks.

“Raymond served aggressively and we couldn’t handle it tonight,” South Bend head coach Kelsey Staats said. “We need to work on moving on from our mistakes instead of dwelling on them.”

Staats added she was pleased with her team’s 90% service average and improved play at the net.

“We were aggressive and had some great moments,” she said.

The Indians face Chief Leschi on the road at 7 p.m. on Thursday.

Raymond will host Willapa Valley in a key matchup of first-place teams at 7 p.m. on Thursday.

Raymond’s junior varsity team beat South Bend JV 25-14 and 25-18.

Forks (6-1, 1-0 Evergreen 1A) won the match 25-15, 25-22 and 25-21 on a night where Hoquiam struggled to find offense.

The Grizzlies’ Carsyn Munger stood out defensively in the match with her net play and Hailey Lawrence had 12 digs in the contest for Hoquiam.

Hoquiam head coach Heather Bozich said a lack of consistency hurt the Grizzlies against Forks.
