Tuesday Baseball Roundup: Elma sweeps double header over Hoquiam

Also: Montesano, PWV, Ocosta pick up wins

The Elma Eagles swept Hoquiam in a 1A Evergreen League doubleheader showdown in Tuesday’s prep baseball games involving Twin Harbors teams.

Elma 16, Hoquiam 2

Elma hammered 11 hits and benefited from nine walks en route to a five-inning victory in the opening game of a double header against Hoquiam on Tuesday in Hoquiam.

The Eagles (3-0) scored three runs in the first inning, highlighted by a two-run double from Blake Corr.

Elma extended its lead to 7-0 in the second frame on a leadoff double by Jarred Bailey, two walks, back-to-back singles by JT Tiffany and Brady Johnston, an error, a fielder’s choice and a groundout.

The Eagles put the game in 10-run rule territory with nine runs in the top of the third inning that included a two-run double from Bailey, and two-run singles from Caleb Knutson and JT Tiffany.

That was more than enough offense for Elma starting pitcher Cobey Moore, who allowed no runs on two hits with six strikeouts and two walks in four innings of work.

Knutson relieved Moore in the bottom of the fifth inning and allowed two unearned runs, struck out two and walked two in the frame.

Tiffany (3-4, 3 R, 2 RBI) and Johnston (3-3, 3 R RBI) led Elma with three hits apiece.

Knutson went 1-for-4 with a run and three RBI with Bailey going 2-for-2 with two doubles , three runs and two RBI.

Alex Reyes took the loss for Hoquiam, allowing seven earned runs on six hits and three walks in two innings pitched.

Hoquiam scored two unearned runs on two errors in the bottom of the fifth inning.

The Grizzlies (0-3) managed two hits in the game off Elma pitching with Jake Templar and Zander Jump collecting one hit each.

Elma 11, Hoquiam 9

Elma scored four runs in the top of the seventh to avoid a loss, then held off a late Hoquiam rally to win the nightcap of a double header in Olympic Stadium.

Trailing 6-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning, Hoquiam rallied for five runs. Troy McMinn doubled in Zander Jump to make it a 6-2 game, but Elma pitcher JT Tiffany was on the verge of getting out of the inning without any further damage after recording to consecutive popouts.

But back-to-back walks followed by a Kort Gordon RBI single cut the Elma lead to 6-3 and loaded the bases.

Grizzlies Tucker Eaton and Cody Drake then each were hit by pitches, forcing in two more runs to bring Hoquiam to within a run at 6-5.

Elma reliever Blake Corr was brought in to pitch and walked Cayden Templar to force in the tying run.

Corr got Jump to pop out to first baseman Brady Johnston to end the inning.

Elma regained the lead when Justin Elliott drove home Brody Rustemeyer with an RBI single on the top half of the sixth.

But Hoquiam tied the game at 7-all in the bottom of the sixth on a double by Alex Reyes that scored Troy McMinn and took the lead two batters later when Reyes scored on a wild pitch.

Elma took an 11-8 lead with four runs in the top of the seventh, all with two outs. With one on and two outs, Tiffany singled to score Jarred Bailey to tie the game, and Rustemeyer put Elma up 10-8 with a two-run double two batters later. A run-scoring single by Caleb Knutson put the Eagles up by three runs heading to the bottom of the seventh.

The Grizzlies also rallied with two outs, scoring a run on a Reyes single that made it an 11-9 ballgame and put the winning run on first base.

But Corr got Templer to fly out to Rustemeyer at short, ending the game and giving the Eagles a thrilling 11-9 victory.

Rustemeyer led Elma’s offense, going 4-for-5 at the plate with three runs, two doubles and a pair of RBI for an Eagles team that had 13 hits in the game.

Tiffany went 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBI for Elma.

McMinn (2-3, 2B, 2 R, 2 RBI) and Reyes (2-4, 2B, R, 2 RBI) collected two hits each for a Hoquiam offense that had eight hits from six different players.

Elma used four pitchers in the game, with Rustemeyer starting the game and pitching two scoreless innings.

Corr earned the victory, allowing three earned runs in 2 1-3 innings pitched.

Jalen Hobucket started on the mound for Hoquiam. The right-hander allowed two earned runs on eight hits with eight strikeouts in four innings pitched.

Montesano 11, Tenino 1

Montesano scored six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to 10-run Tenino in the first game of a doubleheader at Vessey Field in Montesano.

Monte (3-1) scored four runs in the first inning on a fielder’s choice ground out, two Tenino errors and an RBI double off the bat of Kody Lalonde.

After a Cayleb Reninger’s RBI single put Monte up 5-0 in the third inning, the Bulldogs blew the game open with six runs in the fifth, highlighted by Dayton Holmstrom’s single that brought in two runs.

Bulldogs starter Trace Ridgway picked up the win, allowing just one unearned run in the fifth inning and one hit while striking out five with three walks in five innings of work.

Six different Bulldogs had a hit for Monte, with Holmstrom leading the way, going 1-for-3 and driving in three runs.

Montesano starting pitcher Isaiah Pierce allowed three hits in leading the Bulldogs to a victory in the nightcap of the doubleheader.

Pierce struck out four and didn’t walk a batter in tossing a five-inning, complete-game shutout.

Monte’s Cayleb Reninger drove in three runs on a bases-loaded double to give Monte a 3-0 lead in the first inning.

The Bulldogs scored a pair of runs in the second and, after a five-run third inning, led 10-0 heading into the fourth inning.

Seven different Bulldogs collected hits for Monte, with Lucas Salstrom the only Monte player to collect two hits, going 2-for-2 with a run and an RBI.

Pe Ell-Willapa Valley 8, Northwest Christian 0

PWV scored four runs in both the third and sixth innings and benefited from solid pitching in a victory over Northwest Christian in Lacey.

The Titans (1-1) led 1-0 in the top of the third when Hudson Barnum tripled to left field to put PWV up 3-0. Garrett Keeton followed with a single to make it a 4-0 game.

In the sixth, Barnum drove in his third run of the game on a sacrifice fly followed by run scoring singles by Keeton and Kaden Ritzman, the latter driving in two runs.

Gavin Hampton started for PWV and pitched four innings, allowing just one hit while striking out seven with three walks.

Riley Pearson threw three innings of relief for the Titans, striking out six with three walks and one hit to secure the victory.

Keeton was the only Titan with a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 with a run and two RBI.

Ocosta 6, Montesano JV 3

The Ocosta Wildcats picked up a 6-3 victory over Montesano’s junior varsity team in Westport.

Leading 4-3 in the bottom of the fifth inning, Ocosta (3-0) got two insurance runs on an error and a sacrifice fly from Andrew Martin.

Wildcats starter Jackson Reid (4 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 6 K) and reliever Harley Figueroa (3 IP, 2 H, R, 4 K, 2 BB) combined to hold Monte JV to four hits with 10 strikeouts.

Josh Figueroa (2-4, RBI) and Fredrick Bishop (2-3, R) had two hits each for Ocosta.
