Viking girls finally get best of South Bend

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Vikings 52, Indians 49

MENLO — Willapa Valley rallied in the second half to finally get the best of rival South Bend in a Pacific 2B League game Thursday at Tenoski Gym.

Having beaten the Vikings in both a previous league meeting and in Valley’s Jack Q. Pearson holiday tournament, the Indians owned a 26-23 halftime lead Thursday.

The Vikings, however, limited the Tribe to nine points in the fourth quarter. Cami Swartz’s two free throws in the final minute helped give Willapa Valley (9-5, 11-6) a six-point lead.

“We were able to bring a constant amount of defense and offense for four solid quarters,” Valley coach Colby Rogers said. “They’re very well-coached and have some good athletes. You can’t have any lapses against them or they’ll get you.”

Katie Adkins scored 16 points to lead the Vikings and was also praised for rebounding. Hannah Cook, who had 14 points, was also cited by Rogers for defense.

Jessica Sanchez had 15 points and eight assists for South Bend (7-6, 11-6). Hannah Byington had 14 points and Alise Rohr eight rebounds for the Tribe.

South Bend lost despite shooting 51 percent from the field.

“We shot the ball well and were strong on defense,” South Bend coach Gary Wilson said. “We just gave up 23 offensive rebounds and loose balls. That was the difference.”

On Saturday, Willapa Valley visits Ocosta and South Bend is home against Raymond.
