SOUTH BEND — Raul Mora scored seven of his 17 points in the fourth quarter as South Bend notched its first victory by nipping North Beach in a Pacific League contest Thursday night at Koplitz Fieldhouse.

The Hyaks led by five midway through the fourth quarter. But the Indians (1-7, 1-10) capitalized on North Beach turnovers to charge back.

Mora hit a 3-point shot to tie it, then made a free throw in the final minute for the go-ahead point.

”I thought our kids played hard on the defensive end,” South Bend coach Manuel Rangel said.

Juan Bucio had 10 points and four steals for South Bend, while Drew Rose grabbed nine rebounds and Jack Graves seven. A.J. Sanchez swiped three steals for the Tribe.

Tim Johnson paced North Beach (1-6, 2-9) with 15 points.

The teams combined to hit only 12 of 37 free throws, the Hyaks only 4-of-18 from the stripe.

Both teams return to action Saturday, with South Bend traveling to Ilwaco and North Beach visiting Ocosta.

“He was pretty dynamic tonight,” Raymond coach Derek Rask said. “I thought he dominated the glass.”

Raymond’s Kedrick Collins also attained a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Kason Koski, coming off the bench due to an ankle injury suffered in last week’s Raymond New Year’s Classic tournament, still mustered 18 points and was cited by Rask for his all-around play.

The Gulls (5-1, 8-2) trailed by five at halftime but controlled the boards in the second half. Up by 11 with about three minutes left, they survived sub-par foul shooting (9-of-21) to hold off a late Warrior rally.

TACOMA — Powerful Life Christian Academy used spurts in each half to put away Ocosta in a Pacific League game Thursday at Tacoma.

Top-ranked in the state Class 2B coaches poll, the Eagles jumped out to a 19-4 lead late in the first quarter.

Controlling the tempo, however, Ocosta actually trimmed the deficit to 10 in the third period before Life Christian went on a 16-0 run to seal the deal.

“We stuck to our game plan. We’ve been working on fundamentals and we really cut down on turnovers,” Ocosta coach Jason Quinby said. “We played with them for 2 1/2 quarters, but it takes four to win.”

Life Christian ace Luke Lovelady scored 25 points, but Quinby cited the much smaller Paul Bjornsgard for his defensive effort against Lovelady. Bjornsgard also grabbed eight rebounds.

Zach Allton scored nine points for the Wildcats (2-5, 4-7).

“It was a good basketball game,” South Bend coach Gary Wilson said. “Moore shot the ball very well. The big difference was the free throw line.”

Outscored from the field, North Beach made 12-of-18 from the stripe. South Bend was only 4-of-8 from the line.

TACOMA — Ocosta chased after Life Christian Academy for this entire Pacific 2B League game, got a chance to hit a game-winner at the buzzer and watched it fall away on Thursday night.

Down by one after trailing most of the night, the Wildcats set up a final play with four seconds remaining. However, the shot didn’t fall to allow the Eagles to escape.

“It was ugly basketball — we had 30 turnovers, 20 of them on our own, and they had 20 turnovers,” Ocosta head coach Jason Barnum said. “We couldn’t find the handle on the ball tonight.”

Kaylee Barnum led the Wildcats (4-4, 6-5) with a game-high 15 points, with Kristi Raffelson adding nine points and 11 rebounds and Erica Snider 12 points and four steals.
