Gulls edge Vikings

RAYMOND — Staving off a late Willapa Valley comeback, Raymond outlasted its Willapa Harbor rival in a non-league match, 25-23, 25-14, 17-25, 25-27, 15-13, Thursday at Raymond.

Willapa Valley (3-1) overcame a match point against it in the fourth set to push the match to five. Raymond, however, regrouped to take an 8-3 lead in the fifth and withstood a Viking rally.

“I think we need to pass better and we rely on our back-row defense too much,” Raymond coach Bob Swogger said. “Valley was really scrappy and played great defense tonight.”

Karlee Freeman led the Gulls with 20 kills and six aces. Raymond libero Kennis Harland served three aces and brought up 20 digs.

Maddi Murray and Makenna Williams had four kills apiece for the Gulls.

Viking coach Lori Snodgrass said she was happy that her team was able to rally from a two-set deficit.

“We made some adjustments at the beginning of the third set that allowed us to match up better with them,” Snodgrass said.

Hallee Layman topped Willapa Valley with seven kills and five blocks. Katie Adkins and Katelyn McGough enjoyed perfect serving nights, while Brooke Friese was cited defensively for the Vikings.

Raymond will participate in the Adna Invitational on Saturday. Willapa Valley visits Ocosta on Tuesday.

Along with citing the play of Sanchez, Needham noted the setting performance of Hannah Byington.

The Naselle JV team won both sets, 25-19 and 25-16. Naselle’s C team also won, 25-19 and 25-11.

Wildcats win in three

WESTPORT — Layne Martin’s 15 kills and 9 assists helped push Ocosta past Pe Ell in three sets, 25-13, 25-9, 25-17, while playing at home on Thursday.

Ocosta won all three sets by scores of 25-13, 25-9 and 25-17.

Wildcat coach Barbara Rasmus cited the play of Erika Snider, 15 assist sets and 6 kills; Martin, 15 kills and 9 assists; Kaylee Barnum, 16 kills; Emily Snider, who was 100 percent serving; and Caylee Litterer whom Rasmus said did a good job of serving in the second set.

“We hit really well,” Rasmus said. “To hit, you have to have a good pass and have to have somebody setting it. We passed well and the sets were there and when they were there we were putting it down on the floor, so we had quite a few kills.”

Ocosta’s JV also swept Pe Ell’s JV team in winning both sets, 25-11 and 25-10.

Ocosta (3-0) will play at the Adna Invitational on Saturday.
