Eagles win in four

ELMA — Elma completed an unbeaten league season by topping Forks, 25-19, 25-16, 13-25, 25-18, in an Evergreen 1A League contest Thursday at Elma.

The Eagles (8-0, 13-1) had already been assured of their first league volleyball championship since the early 1970s. They will face either Montesano or La Center in a district semifinal scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday at Montesano.

The Forks bus broke down en route to Elma, forcing a late start and a strange set of circumstances in which the varsity match was played first.

Quin Mikel delivered 11 kills, while Kenna Stoney and Kali Rambo added seven kills apiece for the Eagles. Stoney also contributed 16 assists.

“I’m very proud of how the girls finished out their undefeated league season,” Eagle coach Kendra Henry said.

Grizzlies in three

TENINO — Karlie Krohn had 14 kills and eight digs as Hoquiam beat Tenino, 25-19, 25-15, 25-14, in an Evergreen 1A League finale on Thursday at Tenino.

By finishing second in the league, the Grizzlies (5-3, 8-7) advance to the District IV Class 1A tourney Wednesday at La Center. They’ll face either King’s Way Christian or White Salmon in a loser-out opening contest, with the winner advancing to face Trico League champion Castle Rock in the semifinals later that night.

Kacey Pelan dished up 19 assists and ReyLynn Dunn brought up eight digs in Thursday’s match. Hoquiam coach Heather Bozich also cited the play of reserves Carsyn Munger and Sharaya Brydon.

“It was kind of hard to get into a rhythm,” Bozich said. “We pulled it together at the end and finished strong, so I’m proud of them for that.”

The Grizzlies also took the JV match in three sets.

Loggerettes in four

WISHKAH — Host Wishkah earned a share of the 1B Coastal League championship by downing Taholah, 25-6, 22-25, 25-18, 25-18, on Thursday at Brian Eager Memorial Gym.

The Loggerettes (7-1) tied idle Lake Quinault for the league title. The two teams will play off for district seeding at 6 p.m. Friday at Amanda Park.

Wishkah seniors Jesse Thompson and Megan Hill were cited for their leadership in Thursday’s match.

“We had our ups and downs in this match, but continued to fight,” Wishkah coach Darci McMaster said.

Bobcats fall in five

ROCHESTER — Taking command with a six-point run midway through the final set, Rochester outlasted Aberdeen, 19-25, 25-18, 25-20, 18-25, 15-9, in an Evergreen 2A Conference finale on Thursday at Rochester.

Hailee Baretich delivered 12 kills and four aces for the Bobcats, who concluded their season at 1-9 in league and 2-13 overall. Senior Holly Bergeson added nine kills while Tamara Corona went 23-of-24 serving and was commended for excellent defense.

The Bobcats experienced difficulties in the middle two sets with receiving serve, according to head coach Doug Basler.

“It was kind of a microcosm of the season,” Basler said. “We struggled at times, but the attitude stayed good and they kept fighting.”

Rochester won the JV match in three sets, while Aberdeen’s C squad prevailed in three sets.

GIRLS SWIMMING

Subdistrict 2A meet

LACEY — Four Aberdeen swimmers completed a remarkable accomplishment by earning district berths during the subdistrict meet Thursday at the River Ridge High School pool.

With Thursday’s showing, the entire Aberdeen squad qualified for the District IV Championships Nov. 3-4 at The Evergreen State College pool. The majority of the team had already met district qualifying standards.

“This is a quality group of athletes,” Bobcat coach Jan Simons said.

The top three subdistrict finishers in each event, plus those who met district qualifying times, earned district slots.

Aberdeen’s Kenadi Bridges advanced by winning the subdistrict 50-yard freestyle (31.16) and the 100 free (1:12.24). Teammate Madi Green won the 100 backstroke (1:24.9) and placed second in the 200 free.

Aberdeen’s Tatum Heikkila earned the third and final district berth in the 100 backstroke. She had previously qualified in diving.

Trudy Butcher, who was fourth in the 100 breaststroke, had also previously qualified in diving.

GIRLS SOCCER

Beavers 3, Grizzlies 1

TENINO — Scoring twice in the second half, Tenino ended Hoquiam’s season on Thursday at Beaver Stadium.

The Grizzlies had needed a victory to extend their season. They concluded at 2-6 in league and 4-11-1 overall.

Down 1-0 at intermission and 2-0 early in the second half, the Grizzlies cut the margin to one when Taylor Strom caromed an 18-yard free kick off the far post and into the net.

It remained 2-1 until the Beavers added an insurance goal during stoppage time.

“We weren’t able to finish a couple of chances,” Hoquiam coach Drew Grannemann said. “It was highly competitive and it could have gone either way. They were able to finish tonight.”

Grannemann saluted Strom and his lone senior, Kayla Delahanty.

FOOTBALL

Fishermen 52, Hyaks 18

ILWACO — Host Ilwaco trounced North Beach in a Pacific League finale on Thursday.

Details were not reported. The Hyaks wound up their season at 0-5 in league and 2-7 overall.
