GIRLS SWIMMING

Aberdeen Relays

Beginning the meet with a state-qualifying performance, host Aberdeen took team honors at the Aberdeen Relays on Thursday at the YMCA of Grays Harbor.

Winning six events, the Bobcats amassed 110 points, 12 ahead of runner-up Capital.

Aberdeen sophomore Kayleia Sias opened the meet with a state-qualifying mark of 1:03.73 in the 100 backstroke. That helped a Bobcat team that also included Melissa May, Mackayla Waltee and Annetthe Orona win the 400 medley relay with a time of 4:37.42.

The 200 medley team of Sias, Anna Weber, Annika Eisele and Karli Heikkila also met state standards with a winning mark of 1:57.6.

Aberdeen’s other wins came in the 200 freestyle (Weber, Tatum Heikkila, Rylee Watson, Juliana Meza) with a 2:01.6 time, the 400 freestyle (Karli Heikkila, May, Sias, Eisele) at 4:01.03, the 200 backstroke (Mackayla Waltee, Sierra Bunnell, Aliyah Tageant, Camryn Cook) in 2:18.34 and the 200 freestyle (Karli Heikkila, May, Weber and Eisele) relays.

Bobcat coach Jan Simons cited May, Orona, Waltee, Katie Lewis and Juliana Mesa for fine performances.

Aberdeen faces Tumwater on Thursday at River Ridge High School.

VOLLEYBALL

Bulldogs top Bobcats

MONTESANO — Zoe Hutchings put down 10 kills and Hannah Hatcher added 46 assists as Montesano topped Aberdeen, 25-21, 25-15, 25-19, in a non-league match Thursday at Bo Griffith Memorial Gym.

McKenna Miller added six kills as the Bulldogs (1-1) rebounded from a season-opening loss at Chehalis.

“We were passing much better tonight and we were moving together on the court,” Monte coach Renee Volz said.

Aberdeen (0-1) owned a 12-7 lead in the opening set before falling victim to serving difficulties. The Bobcats missed seven serves in the first set alone.

“We had a hard time getting into a rhythm because of all the mistakes,” Bobcat coach Doug Basler said.

Aberdeen’s Jalyn McDaniel, making her setting debut, served three aces and was also cited for floor leadership. Basler also commended the play of Anna Arquette, who had four kills, and libero Tamara Corona.

Montesano won the JV match in two sets, while Aberdeen’s C squad prevailed in two sets.

The Bulldogs host Castle Rock on Monday. On Tuesday, Aberdeen is home against Elma.

Eagles win in four

ELMA — Seizing the momentum in the second set, Elma rolled past Morton-White Pass, 20-25, 25-12, 25-14, 25-12, in a non-league season opener Thursday in Elma.

Quin Mikel served seven aces and delivered eight kills for the Eagles. Kali Rambo also had eight kills, while Kenna Stoney contributed six aces, five kills and 33 assists. Jalyn Sackrider chipped in five kills.

“We played really strong all the way around,” Elma coach Kendra Henry said. “I was very proud of how they played for a first match.”

Morton-White Pass, she added, lost its setter to injury in the first set.

The Timberwolves took the JV match, 25-21, 26-24, but Elma won the C Squad contest, 25-16, 25-13.

The Eagles (1-0) will compete in Centralia’s Centerville Tournament on Saturday.

Grizzlies in three

Kamimi Papp delivered 13 kills and 14 digs as Hoquiam thumped Seton Catholic, 25-15, 25-13, 25-22, in a non-league match Thursday at Hoquiam Square Garden.

Kacey Pelan had 21 assists and ReyLynn Dunn 11 digs for the Grizzlies (1-1).

“We came out with a lot more energy and our communication was a lot better (than in Tuesday’s loss to Raymond),” Grizzly coach Heather Bozich said. “I thought we played really strong at the net.”

The Grizzlies also prevailed in the JV prelim, 25-11, 25-10.

Hoquiam travels to Toledo on Tuesday.

Wildcats win in five

NASELLE — Reversing the momentum in the fifth set, Ocosta outlasted Naselle, 25-21, 25-12, 24-26, 14-25, 15-7, in a non-league match Thursday at Naselle.

Naselle rallied from two sets down to force a fifth set, but the Wildcats regained their form.

“We were back to playing our game,” Ocosta coach Barbara Rasmus said. “We were doing better serve-receive and we were hitting the ball.”

Kaylee Barnum led Ocosta with 17 kills and four aces. Erika Snider added 14 assists and six digs, while Evalyn Marsh brought up seven digs for the Wildcats (1-0).

Emily Snider and Layne Marin each had 100 percent serving nights.

Ocosta’s JVs won in two sets, with Lucy Aaronson commended for fine play.

The Wildcats travel to North Beach on Tuesday.

Gulls in three

RAYMOND — Raymond swept past Onalaska, 25-18, 25-21, 25-16, in a non-league contest Thursday at Raymond.

Karlee Freeman led the Gulls (2-0) with 13 kills, six digs and three aces. Maddi Murray also hammered three aces and also contributed nine digs and six kills.

Seagull coach Bob Swogger commended the setting of Makenna Williams.

“She has great placement and great timing,” he said.

Swogger also lauded the play of libero Kennis Harland.

The Gulls travel to Napavine on Tuesday.

Vikings win in three

PE ELL — Sidney Pollard served six aces as Willapa Valley swept past Pe Ell, 25-11, 25-21, 25-8, in a non-league opener Thursday at Pe Ell.

“One of the key things was, as a team, we served 92 percent and had 13 aces,” Viking coach Lori Snodgrass reported.

Pollard also dished out 14 assists. Brooke Friese had eight digs and three kills from the back row. Hannah Cook contributed eight digs and four kills.

The Vikings took the JV match, 25-18, 25-8.

Willapa Valley is home Monday against Onalaska.

GIRLS SOCCER

Knights 1, Grizzlies 0

BREMERTON — Host Bremerton made a first-half goal stand up to beat Hoquiam in a non-league season opener Thursday at Bremerton.

The Knights scored in the 32nd minute on an 18-yard shot that deflected off the post and into the net.

Hoquiam coach Drew Grannemann was pleased with the play of his young team. He started six freshmen in this contest.

Grizzly goalkeeper Jade Cox made 13 saves. Grannemann also cited the play of forward Connie Hilliard.

Hoquiam hosts Centralia on Tuesday.

BOYS TENNIS

Bobcats 5, Highclimbers 1

Easily sweeping the singles, Aberdeen trounced Shelton in a non-league match Thursday at the Sam Benn Courts.

Aberdeen’s Luis Garcia, Josh Germeaux and Patric Haerle dropped a combined seven games in running the table in singles.

Bobcat coach Andy Duffy cited the improved play of Aaron Larson and Cody Sayres in the second set of a loss in the No. 1 doubles.

The Cats host Black Hills on Monday.

Bobcats, Grizzlies split

Hoquiam’s Carlos Juarez and Aberdeen’s Faith Cardenas won their respective races at a Bobcat-Grizzly dual meet Wednesday at Makarenko Park in Cosmopolis.

Juarez led virtually throughout in the boys race, covering the 5,000-meter course in 19:35. Aberdeen’s Angel Cisneros was second in 19:53.

Cardenas blew away her competition in the girls event with a time of 22:44. Hoquiam’s Alexis Delahanty was second in 24:28.

Aberdeen’s boys and Hoquiam’s girls fielded the only complete teams.

Bobcat coach April Meissner cited the performances of Cisneros, Jimmy Pellervo, Jeshua Manwell and Mercy Johnson. Hoquiam’s Ty Rodrigues and Valerie Roloff drew the praise of Grizzly coach Carly Giles.
