A day after being upset by Montesano, the Elma Eagles had a resounding response.

Five Eagles scored in double digits and a big fourth quarter led Elma to a 74-59 victory over Hoquiam in a 1A Evergreen League game on Thursday in Hoquiam.

In a game that was close until Elma pulled away with a 26-16 fourth quarter, the Eagles offense scored the most points it had in any game this season.

Elma (6-6 overall, 4-2 1A Evergreen) was led by senior guard Canon Seaberg, who scored a team high 19 points — seven in the all-important fourth quarter that saw the Eagles turn a 48-43 lead at the end of the third into 15-point win.

“The second half was one of our best halves of basketball this year,” Elma head coach Matt Ferrier said. “The game got tight on numerous occasions but we always found a way to answer tonight.”

In addition to Seaberg, four additional Eagles players scored at least 12 points in the contest.

Senior Jerred Bailey (13 points), junior Gibson Cain (12 pts.), senior Logan Witt (12 pts.) and sophomore Carson Seaberg (12 pts.) all scored in double digits in Elma’s most complete offensive performance to date this season.

“Can’t be more proud of our offense tonight. You will win games when you have well balanced scoring,” Ferrier said. “Huge night for both the Seaberg brothers. Nice to get Canon back after a being gone for the last two games. He was huge tonight. Cason was our motor. He didn’t quit working and led us on the defensive side of the ball.”

Hoquiam (5-9, 2-4) was led by junior forward Owen McNeill, who scored a game high 20 points that included three 3-pointers.

Gio Foster (12 pts.) and Michael Lorton Watkins (10 pts.) also scored in double digits for the Grizzlies, which currently sit in fourth place in the 1A Evergreen League, a half-game behind Tenino for third.

With the win, Elma sweeps the two-game season series over Hoquiam, having defeated the Grizzlies 47-44 on Jan. 14 in Elma.

After suffering a loss at home to last place Montesano on Wednesday, the Eagles reaffirmed their No. 2 spot in the league with Thursday’s victory.

Elma sits 1.5 games behind Eatonville for the league’s top spot.

“Couldn’t be more happy we found a way to bounce back after our previous defeat,” Ferrier said. “Testament to our character, it’s important to our guys.”

Hoquiam faces Montesano at 7 p.m. Monday in Montesano.

Elma’s next game is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Tuesday against Tenino in Elma.

“Their length bothered us and led to some easy transition baskets for them,” Montesano head coach Doug Farmer said. “We struggled to find any rhythm on offense.”

Monte trailed 10-9 after the first eight minutes but the Cruisers asserted their will in the second quarter to take a 27-17 lead into halftime.

“We got caught up in a little bit of a run-and-shoot type ball game when we really needed to try and control tempo and run our offensive sets,” Ocosta head coach Jason Quinby said. “Ilwaco was more than happy to push the pace and take advantage of our lackadaisical effort on defense at times. Hopefully, we learn from this.”

Willapa Valley 53, Naselle 52

After a big win over No. 6 Mossyrock earlier in the week, Willapa Valley earned a key league victory with a 53-52 win over Naselle on Wednesday in Menlo.

The Vikings (7-7, 3-1 1B Columbia Valley) trailed by eight after the first quarter but got hot in the second quarter, making 9-of-15 shots — including three 3-pointers — in outscoring the Comets (7-6, 3-1) 23-14 in the frame to take a 32-31 lead at halftime.

After a poor-shooting third quarter that saw Willapa Valley hit just 1-of-11 shots and commit seven turnovers to surrender its slim lead, the Vikings trailed 47-43 with 3:42 left in the game.

But Willapa Valley closed out the game on a 10-2 run and hit 11-of-14 free throws in the fourth quarter to secure the victory.

A late Naselle 3-pointer at the buzzer ended the game, giving Willapa Valley a 53-52 victory and putting the Vikings in the race for the league title.

“(Naselle) has had our number and that is a nice win for our kids,” Willapa Valley head coach John Peterson said. “I’m so happy for them.”

Willapa Valley senior Lanissa Amacher led all scorers with 22 points, including making a 60 foot shot near the end of the first half.

Ana Chavez and Brooklyn Patrick scored nine points apiece — with Chavez scoring on three 3-point shots and Patrick hitting 7-of-10 free throws in the fourth quarter — and Hannah Hamilton added five points, including scoring off a wayward ball that bounced off her head and went in for a field goal.

“Sometimes, it’s better to be lucky than good,” Peterson said of his team’s uncanny ability to make abnormal baskets on Thursday.
