Down by nine runs, the Ocosta Wildcats nearly mounted an improbable comeback but ultimately fell short, falling 20-18 to Colfax in the first round of the 2B State Tournament on Friday in Yakima.

Down 10-1 in the bottom of the second inning, Ocosta (15-11) scored four runs in the bottom of the second to climb back in the game at 10-6.

But Colfax responded with two more runs in the third and three in the fourth to extend the lead to 15-8 at the end of four innings.

Lillyan Barnum led off the Ocosta seventh with a solo homer and Kiana Battiste followed with a triple as the Wildcats pushed to mount a thrilling comeback.

Ryann Raffelson chased Battiste home with a sacrifice fly, but that was as close as Ocosta would get as the Wildcats were relegated to the consolation bracket with the loss.

Kaylee Barnum continued to swing a hot bat, leading Ocosta with a 3-for-3 day, including two home runs, four runs scored and a whopping seven runs driven in.
