Pickernell sweeps Chief Taholah Days races

Three days of racing equalled three wins for Todd Pickernell as he swept the main-event races during the Chief Taholah Days July 3-5.

Aboard his canoe ‘Valerie Lee,’ Pickernell won races on the Taholah, Hoh and La Push rivers over the Independence Day weekend. He defeated Pete Kalama and Pete’s son, Freddie Kalama, on July 3 and followed that performance by sweeping all three heats and the final on the Fourth of July.

Pickernell benefited from a bit of fortuitous luck in the 15 mile final race on July 5, winning the race after Dean Johnstone experienced engine troubles and Vincent Burke lost control of his canoe ‘Cecily Ann.’

The next race is scheduled for July 20-21 during the Quilyute Days in La Push.
