Elma resident wins gold at Senior Games
Former Elma High School educator and coach Paul Roberts won a gold medal at the World Senior Games on Oct. 16, beating a previously undefeated world-record holder in the process.
Competing in his fourth Senior Games, Roberts jumped 2.21 meters (7 feet, 3 inches) in the 70-74 standing long jump to edge Wayne Tavares of Plymouth, Mass. and Andy Pitas of Moab, Utah. Tavares was second with a mark of 2.14 meters while Pitas, who owns world records for the standing long jump in both the 65-69 and 70-74 age groups, placed third with a mark of 2.11 meters. It’s the first time in Senior Games competition Pitas has not placed first in the event.
It’s the first gold medal for Roberts in the event at the world championships, as the 11-year Senior Games veteran placed second in 2013 and third in 2015. He holds state Senior Games records for the standing long jump in the 65-69 age group (8 feet) and the 70-74 division (7-06.75).
Local golfer scores second ace this month
Less than two weeks after recording his first hole in one, local golfer Doug King repeated the feat.
King scored an ace at the par-3, 15th hole at Highland Golf Course on Wednesday. King used a 9-iron to sink the 110-yard shot, which was witnessed by four individuals, according to course officials.
