WINLOCK — Ben Byington rushed for 275 yards and scored three touchdowns as South Bend opened its season by trouncing Winlock in a non-leaguer Friday at Winlock.

Byington broke a pair of 66-yard scoring runs and also caught a 10-yard TD pass from Drew Rose.

Rose, who didn’t play football last year while recovering from an injury, made an impressive debut at quarterback. He completed four of five passes for 86 yards and also tallied on runs of 4 and 24 yards.

Raul Mora added a 4-yard touchdown run, kicked four conversions and a 21-yard field goal for the Indians.

South Bend led 20-3 at the half and 34-3 after three quarters.

“The defense came out rock solid,” Tribe coach Shane Byington said. “The offense played well once we shook off the nerves and rust of the first game.”

Coach Byington cited the play of his offensive line and defenders Josiah Markwell and Chase Flynn.

The Indians (1-0) are scheduled to host Chief Leschi on Friday.
