South Bend names spring sports award winners

South Bend High School’s spring sports season included some standout performances in 2018. The school recognized those athletes as it released its list of spring sports award winners last week.

Ben Byington impressed for the boys track and field team and was awarded the Merle Milliam award along with the Sheena Jarvi Memorial award.

Not to be outdone, his sister Hannah Byington was recognized with the Merle Millam award and was recognized by coaches as Most Inspirational for the girls track team.

There were multiple winners for both the Indians baseball and softball teams. Michael Oropeza and Mayson Estle were honored with the baseball team’s Coaches Award while Chloe Sawyer was tabbed MVP for the softball team.

Boys Track

Coach’s Award: Jacob Lush. Most Improved: Preston Lawhead. Merle Millam Award: Ben Byington. Sheena Jarvi Memorial: Ben Byington.

Girls Track

Most Inspirtational: Hannah Byington. Most Improved: Jessica Sanchez. Merle Millam Award: Hannah Byington.

Baseball

Golden Arm: Drew Rose. Silver Slugger: Chase Flynn. Most Improved: Jeff Fetters. Most Inspirational: Josiah Markwell. Coach’s Award: Michael Oropeza, Mayson Estle.

Softball

Most Improved: Zaira Medina. Most Inspirational: Riley Hampton. Coaches Award: Kemra Boothe. MVP: Chloe Sawyer.
