When it rains, it pours.
In the case of the Raymond-South Bend Ravens football team, both literally and figuratively.
The Ravens coughed up the football seven times leading to a 42-7 loss to Pe Ell-Willapa Valley at a rain-soaked Millam Field in South Bend on Friday.
In the first meeting between the two combine schools, RSB (0-3 overall, 0-1 2B Pacific League – Coastal) drew first blood when defensive back Daniel Medeiros intercepted a Tyler Adkins pass to set up the Ravens offense with good field position in the first quarter.
RSB running back Ty Reidinger converted the turnover into points when he scored on a 3-yard run to put the Ravens up 7-0 at the 7:57 mark of the first quarter.
With PWV driving later in the first quarter, the Ravens recovered a fumble in their own red zone to end the Titans threat at the end of the frame.
But as the skies opened up and the rain came down harder, any hopes RSB had of a victory in this newly-formed rivalry game were washed away with it.
PWV (2-1, 2-0) scored 21 points in the second quarter alone, taking advantage of multiple RSB miscues to seize control of the game.
The Titans recovered a fumble deep inside Ravens territory and tied the game when running back Blake Howard scored on a 20-yard run at the 8:15 mark.
PWV took possession again deep inside RSB territory when RSB punter Adrian Quintana’s knee touched the ground when field a low snap on fourth down, causing a turnover on downs.
A few plays later, Titans running back Derek Fluke scored on a 13-yard run for a 14-7 lead with 6:08 left in the half.
The Titans went up 21-7 on a when Fluke took an option pitch and broke loose for a 53-yard touchdown with 2:33 to go in the second quarter.
Fortunes didn’t get much better for RSB in the second half, as the Ravens continued to struggle to hold on to the football, and the Titans made them pay.
The Ravens fumbled in all six of its second-half possessions.
After an RSB fumble, PWV running back Wil Clements scored on a 4-yard run at the 9:38 mark of the third quarter and — after another RSB turnover — scored on a 9-yard run 23 seconds later to put the Ravens up 35-7.
Clements scored his third straight touchdown, and the final points of the game, later in the third quarter when he grabbed a mishandled RSB exchange and took of 51 yards down field for a fumble-return touchdown.
RSB had eight fumbles in the game, losing seven of them. All six of the Ravens’ second-half possessions ended in turnovers.
“We had six turnovers in dry weather (last week against Adna), so all week long we were going to put two hands on the ball,” PWV head coach Josh Fluke said. “We actually put water on the balls to make them a little wet because we heard there was a storm coming in. … I told the boys the key to winning this ballgame is going to be ball security and that showed.”
PWV out gained RSB 308-143, with all yardage for both teams being on the ground as the teams combined to go 0-for-5 passing.
Derek Fluke (14 carries, 127 yards 2 TD) and Howard (17-101, TD) led PWV, while Reidinger (27-119, TD) led the Ravens in rushing.
Howard led PWV in tackles with 13 (7 solo) followed by Kolten Fluke (6 tackles, 5 solo), Owen Little (6 tackles, 3 solo) and Kaden Ritzman (6 tackles) led the Titans defense, with Connor Keeton recovering two fumbles.
The game was the first football game played between the two combo schools and the first on Millam Field’s new turf.
“If we keep the combines going, this will definitely be a rivalry for years,” Fluke said. “Valley was always rivals with Raymond and South Bend, so yes, I think this is the start of a new rivalry.”
