Gut Check Invite

SILVERDALE — Winning his final six matches, Hoquiam’s Artimus Johnson finished third in his division at the Gut Check Invitational that concluded Saturday at the Kitsap County Fairgrounds.

After dropping a 3-1 decision to Lincoln of Tacoma’s J.J. Dixon in the 182-pound round of 16, Johnson charged back through the consolation round to earn his third-place award.

He avenged his earlier loss to Dixon with a 5-0 win in his next-to-last bout Saturday. Johnson then edged Franklin Pierce’s Bryce House, 1-0, in the match to decide third and fourth places.

Johnson was the lone Hoquiam participant in the invitational-only tourney, which featured 64-man brackets.

“He wrestled a little cautious early (in the tournament),” Hoquiam coach T.J. Helland said. “But today was about as good as I’ve ever seen him wrestle.”

The Grizzlies will host Centralia in a dual match Wednesday.

GIRLS WRESTLING

Kelso Invitational

KELSO — Aberdeen placed fifth among 67 teams in the Kelso Invitational that concluded Saturday.

The Bobcats cracked the top five despite not having a finalist.

Aberdeen’s Karli Heikkila was third at 155 pounds. Faith Cardenas was fourth at 100 pounds and Camryn Cook fifth at 140.

“That was my goal for the tournament,” Bobcat coach Craig Yakovich said of the top-five finish, “and they got there. We wrestled well last year and we ended up 11th. It was a total team effort, because we didn’t have anyone in the finals.”

Taking only four girls, Hoquiam placed 24th in the team standings.

“I’d say that was a very decent performance for four girls,” HHS coach Buck Giles said.

Hoquiam’s Bianca Lopez took fifth at 105 pounds and Alexis Delahanty sixth at 110.

The Grizzlies will host Centralia on Wednesday night. Aberdeen visits Rochester for a dual match Thursday.

Vikings 56, Seagulls 53

RAYMOND — Willapa Valley jumped out to an early lead with long-range shooting and ignited late to edge Raymond in a Pacific 2B League contest on Saturday.

The Vikings (3-4, 7-4) hit 11 3-pointers in the contest to help make up for shooting less than 50 percent from the free throw line in the game.

“It was a huge win for us at their place,” Valley coach Jay Pearson said. “Walker Oblad hit four threes for us in the first quarter to get us off to a fast start, but it was a total team effort.”

Valley was able to shut down the Gulls with solid defense from Ryon Ashley who held Raymond’s Kason Koski to nine points and Matt Pearson who kept Raymond’s Marcus Anderson to just five points.

“I don’t think our guys approached the game the right way,” Raymond coach Derek Rask said. “I thought Willapa Valley did a good job of controlling the offensive and defensive aspects of the game. In the fourth, I thought they simply outplayed us. They wanted to win the game more than we did.”

Matt Pearson led the Vikings with 17 points and Oblad added 15 points, while Peter Hamilton added 12 rebounds.

Devine Souvannavanh finished with 20 points for the Gulls, while Luke Hamilton scored 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.

Valley hosts Life Christian on Tuesday, while Raymond (5-2, 8-3) will get a shot at revenge against the Vikings in Menlo on Wednesday.

WESTPORT — Kobe Beck scored 16 of his 27 points in the second half as Ocosta rallied past North Beach in a Pacific League game Saturday at Westport.

Shooting only 15 percent from the field, the Wildcats trailed 20-13 at the half. They underwent a dramatic turnaround in the second half, however, connecting on 11-of-22 from the floor.

Beck made 7 of his 10 attempts from 3-point range, including four treys in the second half. The sophomore guard went 9-of-14 from the field.

“All of his shots were good in-rhythm shots,” Ocosta coach Jason Quinby said. “The second half, we got great ball movement. We are working on getting good and great shots, not just shots.”

Zach Allton had nine points and four assists for the Wildcats (3-5, 5-7).

Tim Johnson scored 18 points for North Beach (1-7, 2-10).

On Tuesday, Ocosta hosts Ilwaco while North Beach is home against Chief Leschi.

MONTESANO — Cruising to a 41-7 halftime lead, Montesano went on to trounce Onalaska in a non-league makeup game Saturday at Bo Griffith Memorial Gym.

Jordan Spradlin had 13 points and 15 rebounds while Shayla Floch added 10 points for the Bulldogs (10-2).

Montesano helped force 27 turnovers.

The 40-point running-clock mercy rule was implemented in the second half. Playing almost exclusively reserves, the Bulldogs went scoreless in the fourth quarter.

“We worked really hard on defense,” Monte coach Julie Graves said. “Our transition offense worked well and when we needed to be patient in our half-court offense, we moved the ball and found the open teammate.”

Hannah Quinn handed out four assists for the Bulldogs.

Montesano visits rival Elma on Tuesday.

Ocosta (4-5, 6-6) shot only 22 percent from the field and missed all seven of its free throws.

“Self-inflicted turnovers killed us and cold shooting,” Ocosta coach Jason Barnum said. “We couldn’t find the rim.”

Kaylee Barnum and Kristi Raffelson had eight points apiece for the Wildcats.
