Russell Wilson gets at-bat in spring training game with Yankees

TAMPA, Fla. — Russell Wilson got his wish.

The Seahawks quarterback, who arrived in Yankees camp on Monday and has been working out with the club all week, got an at-bat Friday afternoon in a Grapefruit League game against the Braves.

Wilson, pinch-hitting for Aaron Judge to lead off the bottom of the fifth inning, struck out swinging against Atlanta left-hander Max Fried.

Wilson swung hard and fouled back a fastball, then took a curveball to fall in a 0-and-2 hole. After watching back-to-back fastballs miss the strike zone, Wilson swung through a 2-and-2 fastball that came in at 93 mph.

The Yankees acquired Wilson, who received a loud ovation from the large crowd at Steinbrenner Field upon his introduction, last month from the Rangers. He had not appeared in a game of any kind since 2011.

Initially general manager Brian Cashman said Wilson would only work out with the club and not appear in a game, something the player, who will be leaving camp Sunday morning, hoped would occur.

“I’ll be ready if it happens,” Wilson said with a smile earlier in the day.

The 29-year-old Wilson said the Seahawks were on board with him getting in a game.

“We’re communicating the whole time,” Wilson said. “The reality is I’ve always been working out, always training, they know that.”

Wilson, rarely seen not talking to other players in the clubhouse since his arrival, raved about his experience.

“It’s been great,” Wilson said. “I think the best thing is the character of men in this locker room. I think the discipline it takes to be great … this organization has pride and tradition, you can feel that. That’s real. There’s a reason why they’ve won 27 world championships.”
