Regional seeds set for local basketball teams

Eight Twin Harbors prep teams learn regional-round opponents

The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association announced its pairings for the first round of its upcoming regional and state playoffs, which are set to begin on Friday.

A total of eight Twin Harbors area teams earned invitations to the state tournament, with the highest seeds going to Elma’s girls team, which earned the fifth seed in the 1A tournament, and the Willapa Valley boys team, which will enter the 2B state playoffs as a No. 6 seed.

Here is a quick peek as to what a few Twin Harbors teams will face in the first round, followed by a schedule of all local teams’ regional playoff matchups.

2B Boys: No. 6 Willapa Valley vs. No. 3 St. George

Willapa Valley will take on a team that brings some size onto the court when the Vikings head to West Valley High School to face St. George in the 2B Regional Playoffs.

The Vikings (19-5) are coming off a 58-37 loss to Toledo and Jay Pearson sees a lot of similarities between his team’s last opponent and its next one.

“They are pretty similar to Toledo. They play aggressive man-to-man and they have some height and speed that will bother us,” he said. “They also have two pretty big post players. We’ll have to work on a defense that protects the middle and we can’t let their guards shoot.”

The Dragons (21-2) have two senior guards with shooting ability in Ben Adams and Erik Farias. St. George also has a 6-foot-6 Xander Werkman patrolling the paint.

The Vikings will counter with guards Logan Walker and Matt Pearson, who both averaged over 17 points a game.

The Vikings and Dragons will face off at 4 p.m. at West Valley High School on Saturday in a game that will determine seeding in the state tournament.

2B Girls: No. 11 Willapa Valley vs. No. 14 Lake Roosevelt

Willapa Valley will face Lake Roosevelt with a chance to play in the state tournament on the line in the 2B girls Regional Playoffs.

The Raiders (15-8) ended up second in the Central Washington B League and has its district tournament run end with two straight losses to Liberty Bell and Brewster.

Willapa Valley (18-5) had its district tournament run end in the semifinals, which landed the Vikings in the 11th seed in regionals.

The Vikings will play the Raiders on Saturday at 6 p.m. in Tumwater.

1A Girls: No. 5 Elma vs. No. 4 Cashmere

Elma will have to cool down a hot-shooting guard when the Eagles face Cashmere.

Cashmere (20-2) has gotten the majority of its scoring from Hailey Van Lilth who averages just over 34 points a game. The junior guard is the only player on the Bulldogs averaging double figure scoring.

Elma (22-2) spread its scoring around this season, led by Jalyn Sackrider who averaged 13.6 points a night. Quin Mikel and Kali Rambo have also been big contributions on offense with over 11 points a game each.

Elma and Cashmere will face each other with seeding on the line at Wenatchee high school at 6 p.m. On Friday.

1A Girls: No. 14 Montesano vs. No. 11 Zillah

Montesano got into 1A Regional Playoffs with a win over La Center on Monday and will need another win over Zillah to continue on to state.

Zillah (17-6) is a relatively young team with just three seniors on the roster but the Leopards do have a little bit of size. Zillah will have a presence in the paint with center Addison Krueger and Maddie Wallace.

Montesano (15-9) has taken advantage of its presence inside all season long with center Zoe Hutchings leading the team with 17.5 points a night.

The Bulldogs and Leopards will meet at Davis High School in Yakima at 4 p.m on Saturday with a trip to state on the line.
