Aberdeen’s chance at a berth in the 2A State Football Tournament ended with a 28-0 play-in game loss to Ridgefield on Saturday at Ridgefield High School.

Ridgefield (10-0) converted twice on fourth down in its opening drive and scored on a 13-yard pass from quarterback Logan DeBeaumont to receiver Ty Snider for a 7-0 first-quarter lead.

Aberdeen’s defense kept the score right there for most of the first half, halting two Spudders drives with fourth-down stops.

With 1:18 left in the second quarter, Ridgefield doubled its lead when Debeaumont hit Snider for a 13-yard touchdown pass.

Ridgefield scored on an 18-yard touchdown pass from DeBeaumont to Jakob Braunstein with 7:18 in the third quarter to go up 21-0.

The Bobcats (5-4), which struggled to cross midfield against the Spudders defense in the first half, penetrated into the Ridgefield red zone with a 20-play, 69-yard drive to the Spudders 11-yard line.

But on a fourth-down play, Bobcats quarterback Kale Goings was sacked by linebacker Matt Lewis, ending Aberdeen’s best scoring chance of the evening.

The Spudders drove back downfield and put the game away on a 6-yard sweep from running back Davis Pankow to go up 28-0.

Goings was 5-for-7 for 21 yards and a pick.

DeBeaumont was 12-for-26 for 43 yards and was intercepted by Aberdeen senior defensive back Drew Lock in the fourth quarter.

Spudders receiver Isaiah Cowley caught seven passes for 71 yards while Braunstein hauled in two catches for 85 yards.

Aberdeen junior running back Jeremy Sawyer ran 20 times for a game-high 48 yards, giving him 1,234 rushing yards on the season.

“Offensively, we didn’t block their (middle linebacker Wyatt Bartroff) and I think he made every tackle,” Aberdeen head coach Todd Bridge said, noting his team had just one first down in the first half. “We didn’t make a whole lot of mistakes besides that. We just couldn’t keep our defense off the field and kept putting our defense in bad situations. It felt like the entire first half was played on our half of the field, and it probably was.”

Despite the season-ending loss, Bridge said his athletes “played gutty” and is optimistic for the program’s future.

“We were one game away from making history. … I believe we are going to be a lot better next year,” he said. “Cracking the code and making it to the state playoffs is a huge deal. If we want to be a contender in this league, we have to make those steps to put ourselves in a situation where we make the state playoffs.”

Hoquiam 32, Fort Vancouver 24

Hoquiam finished its season with a 32-24 victory over Fort Vancouver at the Kiggins Bowl in Saturday in Vancouver.

Hoquiam (1-6 overall) had planned on playing a Week 10 game after losing three games earlier in the season due to the district shutting down all school-related sports activities for several weeks earlier this fall.

The Trappers (0-8) had also been looking for a Week 10 game after losing games due to COVID protocols earlier this season.

After Hoquiam’s make-up game against Elma fell through due to various COVID testing and contact-tracing issues within the Hoquiam school system, the Grizzlies and Trappers made a date to face off on Saturday.

The Grizzlies dressed just 19 players (no seniors), with three freshmen and two sophomores in the starting lineup for Saturday’s game.

Hoquiam led 7-0 on a 5-yard TD run from quarterback Zander Jump in the first quarter and took a 13-0 first-half lead when Jump hit Gevin Wonderly with a 16-yard pass.

After a Wonderly interception, Hoquiam scored its third touchdown of the game when Jump ran it in from 17 yards out.

Fort Vancouver responded with a touchdown on two play to make it a 21-8 game with just seconds left before the half.

Hoquiam’s Anthony Burtenshaw extended the lead to 27-8 when he bulldozed into the end zone from 2-yards out.

The Grizzlies’ lead shrank when Fort Vancouver took the kickoff to the house for a touchdown and a 27-16 lead.

Hoquiam responded with their best drive of the contest, chewing up 65 yards on 13 plays capped by a Jump 2-yard TD run.

Trailing 33-16, the Trappers scored in quick fashion once again to trim Hoquiam’s lead to 33-24.

Hoquiam was forced to punt and with just seconds remaining a Fort Vancouver pass to the end zone was intercepted by jump to secure Hoquiam’s first victory of the season.

“Really proud of this young group,” McMillan said, citing James Monroe (2 sacks), Brendyn Attard (2 sacks), Jake Templer (leading tackler) and Wonderly (fum. rec., INT) for leading the defense.

Jump was 10-for-13 passing for 108 yard and a TD pass.

Templer caught five passes for 45 yards with Wonderly (3-41) and Monroe (2-22) also having multi-catch games for the Grizzlies.

Burtenshaw (38-185, TD) and Jump (15-113, 3 TD) both went over the century mark on Saturday with Templar contributing 42 rushing yards on three carries.

Hoquiam freshman Akasha Deason also made history on Saturday as the first female to start a varsity game for the Grizzlies in program history, playing wide receiver and special teams.

Tenino 2, Elma 1

Two first-half goals by Tenino proved to be too much to overcome as Elma’s season ended with a 2-1 win in the 2A District 4 consolation final on Saturday in Montesano.

Elma (11-7-1 overall) fell behind 1-0 on a goal by Tenino’s Kami Oliveira in the third minute followed by a goal by Trista Shoop 10 minutes later.

The Eagles got on the board with less than a minute remaining in the game when Beta Valentine swiped the ball from a Tenino defender, dribbled through a few Tenino players and buried a shot from the top of the box into the top corner of the net for a goal.

Elma, which defeated Tenino twice in the regular season before Saturday, missed a shot at a state-tournament berth with the loss.

Kalama 3, Raymond 1

Raymond lost a close, competitive 2B District Championship matchup with a 23-25, 19-25, 25-21 and 19-25 loss to Kalama on Saturday in Adna.

Raymond (16-2 overall) had not lost to a 2B school this season until falling to the Chinooks (19-2) in the district-title game.

Kyra Gardner led the Seagulls with 22 kills and a pair of aces.

Karsyn Freeman added 10 kills and three aces and was cited by head coach Bob Swogger for playing well in serve-receive after being targeted by Kalama.

Sidney Swogger had 25 assists to go along with four kills and Kyndal Koski led Raymond’s defense with 24 digs.

After being down two sets to the state’s third-ranked team according to the WIAA RPI 2B rankings, Coach Swogger said he liked his team’s response and is looking forward to seeing what it can do at next week’s state tournament.

“This was the first time our team had been in this situation and we handled it pretty well,” he said. “If we would have cleaned up some of our serving errors I feel it would probably be a different result. … I feel very optimistic with our chances next week at state as long as we keep up this level of play and improve on service errors.”

Seeding for the state tournament is expected to be announced Sunday afternoon.
