Tigers 42, Gulls 16

RAYMOND — Reigning state 2B champion Napavine spoiled Raymond’s season opener on Friday.

Napavine opened the scoring with a touchdown in the first quarter and held Raymond scoreless going into the second. Raymond got on the board in the second quarter with 11:55 to go by way of a safety by defensive linemen Christian Anderson and Alberto Diaz, but Napavine was there to answer with two more touchdowns of its own to lead Raymond 21-2 at halftime.

Reese Garcia put the first third-quarter points on the board for Raymond with a 65-yard touchdown run with 11:42 to go in the third. The Tigers scored another touchdown to make the score 28-9 going into the fourth quarter.

Napavine scored two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter, while Raymond’s Patrick Edwards ran the ball in for a 3-yard touchdown with 3:52 to go.

Raymond head coach Luke Abbott noted that Napavine was well coached and “definitely have some athletes.”

“Overall we came in with 17 guys eligible and the majority of the guys had to play the entire game,” Abbott said.

Patrick Edwards carried the ball for 16 carries for 60 yards, Reese Garcia had 6 carries for 71 yards and Crawford Mason had 11 carries for 42 yards. Abbott noted the play of Christian Anderson on the defensive line, but added they still have some work to do defensively.

“Overall defensively I think we just need to learn how to break down and tackle a little bit better,” he said.

Raymond (0-1) travels to Rainier (1-0) on Friday.
