WESTPORT — The Ocosta High School baseball team had its winning streak snapped at 11 games after falling to the Evergreen Lutheran Eagles 3-0 on Senior Night.
Eagles ace pitcher Josiah Helmilch was nearly unhittable, allowing just one Wildcats basehit — a line-drive single off the bat of senior Hayden Hoff in the second inning — with nine strikeouts and one walk to pick up the non-league victory.
“He is a legit ace pitcher,” Ocosta head coach Mike Allton said of Helmlich. “He was dealing it all night.”
The Wildcats (13-2 overall, 11-1 Pacific 2B) fielded a team of nine seniors to begin the game and Allton made sure all 10 of his upperclassmen played in the Senior Night contest.
In addition to getting the Wildcats lone base hit against arguably the best pitcher they’ve faced this season, he also started on the mound for Ocosta, allowing one earned run on two hits with three strikeouts in 4-2/3 innings pitched.
Kobe Beck relieved Hoff and pitched 2-1/3 innings of one-hit baseball, striking out three Eagles in the process.
Ocosta may still get another shot at Helmilch, as the Wildcats are set to face the Eagles (9-1, 8-1 SeaTac) in the final game of the regular season on May 3 in Tacoma.
