Prep Roundup: Montesano’s Roundtree, Aberdeen’s Bell place at premiere girls wrestling meet

Several Twin Harbors prep wrestling standouts placed atop the podium as we review local prep wrestling results from the weekend.

GIRLS PREP WRESTLING

Two of Twin Harbors’ best place at Braided 64

Those that question the the growth of girls prep wrestling in the the state of Washington need look no further than the “Braided 64” Kelso Girls Invitational.

The premiere girls wrestling invitational on Friday and Saturday at Kelso High School drew competitors for over 103 schools and fielded 30 full prep teams.

And two of the Twin Harbors’ best finished on the podium.

Montesano’s Kya Roundtree and Aberdeen’s Felicia Bell placed third and fourth, respectively, in their weight classes at the feature event.

Roundtree won two matches via fall and technical fall to advance to the quarterfinal round of the 170-pound weight class, where she defeated St. Helen’s grappler Analicea Ordonez via pinfall at 5:00.

After losing a narrow 3-2 decision to Toppenish’s Islah Alcala, Roundtree advanced to the third-place match by defeating Davis’ Shawnnastasia Jackson via fall at 3:52.

The Bulldogs senior then defeated St. Helen’s wrestler Jadyn Pense via fall at 2:29 to place third in the 170-pound weight class, the highest placement for any Twin Harbors competitor at the meet.

In the 125-pound class, Bell advanced to the semifinals with three pinfall wins followed by a victory over White River’s Marli Miller at 3:07 of their quarterfinal match.

Bell lost an 11-2 major decision to Sedro-Woolley’s Micayla Yates in the semis before bouncing back with a 7-4 victory over Everett’s Diala Haro in the consolation round.

Bell finished off her meet in fourth place after a pinfall loss to Toppenish’s Vania Diego at 1:00.

Aberdeen’s Selena Martinez (145 pounds) and Asha Martin (155) each won three matches but finished just off the podium in their weight classes.

North Beach’s Mayra Strandberg also finished just off the podium after winning three matches in the 115-pound weight class.

Monte girls place fourth at Mt. Tahoma Classic

With two top individual finishes, Montesano placed fourth overall at the Mt. Tahoma Classic on Saturday in Tacoma.

Montesano’s Angelina Brunzie (135 pounds) and Emma Peterson (140) each won their respective weight classes to lead the Bulldogs, which scored 51 points to place fourth as a team overall.

Samantha Yeoman (135, 2nd), Julianna Smith (100, 4th), Sage Forsythe (120, 4th), Karlee Watson (105, 6th) and Kiara Whisenhunt (115, 6th) also made the podium for the Bulldogs.

Shelton won the event with 106 points followed by Lincoln (Tacoma) with 53 points to place second.

South Kitsap placed third with 53 points, one ahead of Montesano.

BOYS PREP WRESTLING

Elma’s Espinoza, Hoquiam’s Bryson win in Castle Rock

Elma’s Xavier Espinoza and Hoquiam’s Oliver Bryson won their respective weight classes at the Jim Bair Invitational on Saturday at Castle Rock High School.

Espinoza defeated Rainier’s Walker Makinson via pinfall 40 seconds into the match to win the 106-pound championship.

Bryson defeated Union’s Alex Olson via fall at 2:39 to claim the 190-pound title.

Led by second-place finishes from Talatheon Warness (113 pounds), Mickey Hatton (150) and Paul Baltazar (285), the Aberdeen Bobcats placed third overall as a team with 111.5 points.

Montesano places fifth at Mt. Tahoma Classic

Led by a top podium placement by Gage Stutesman, the Montesano Bulldogs placed fifth overall at the Mt. Tahoma Classic on Saturday in Tacoma.

Stutesman won the 157-pound weight class with a 9-1 major decision over Issaquah’s Brycen True to lead the Bulldogs, which scored 51 points as a team.

Logan Roberts placed second in the 285-pound class for Montesano.

Aberdeen’s Olson competes at Kentridge invite

Aberdeen’s Zeke Olson got some work in on Saturday by competing in the Kentridge Invitational at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.

Olson took 26th place out of 33 divers with 170.55 points.

Bobcats diving coach Carley Giles noted Olson got better as the meet went on and performed well in a very loud and busy environment.

The full team kicks off the 2024 portion of the schedule on Tuesday at River Ridge (Lacey) in a non-league dual meet.
