Prep Roundup: Montesano softball proves No. 2 ranking is no fluke, beats 3A Kelso

KELSO — The mark of a championship team is you take on all challengers: Anytime…any place…anywhere.

The Montesano High School softball team, the state’s second-ranked program according to maxpreps.com, proved once again they are worthy of the championship moniker.

The Bulldogs thwarted a late rally and overcame three home runs en route to an impressive 7-5 road victory over 3A power Kelso on Monday.

Monte (13-1, 7-0 Evergreen 1A) got on the board with a two-run double off the bat of Lindsay Pace in the first inning.

The Bulldogs doubled their lead to 4-0 in the second, when Pace lined a two-run single into right field to score Abi Parkin and Maddie Ekerson.

Aftter Peyton Poler singled in Parkin and Pace in the top of the sixth inning, Montesano held a comfortable 7-1 lead.

But Kelso, which is 14-2 overall and leading the 3A Greater St. Helen’s League, stormed back in the bottom of the sixth when they scored five runs, capped by back-to-back home runs by Capri Franzen and Hailey Parsons, to make it a 7-5 ballgame.

But Pace worked around a leadoff single in the bottom of the seventh by inducing a double play followed by a pop out to end the game.

Monte starting pitcher Samantha Stanfield shut down the vaunted Kelso lineup, allowing just one hit — a fourth inning home run to Parsons — while striking out 11 in five innings of work.

Things don’t get any easier for the Bulldogs, as they are scheduled to face another 3A power in the Redmond Mustangs (16-1, 13-0 KingsCo League) at 5:30 p.m. on Friday.

Two big innings sink Elma

In a game where both teams committed multiple errors, it was the Eagles’ inability to capitalize their opponents miscues as Elma fell to Tenino 6-3 on Tuesday.

Elma got off to a strong start with a pair of runs in the first but saw that lead evaporate when Tenino scored three in the second inning.

Both teams committed five errors, leaving Elma coach Jim Hill frustrated after losing a game he felt was winnable.

“We have to cut down on our walks and our errors, then we can compete,” he said. “We have to expect that we can compete and they have to get a lot more mentally tough as a ball players.”

Elma (5-10, 2-7) will get a chance at some payback when they play Tenino again on the road at 4 p.m. Wednesday.
