Prep Roundup: Montesano baseball clinches Evergreen 1A title with win over Hoquiam

HOQUIAM — Montesano baseball clinched a league title with a 5-3 win over Hoquiam on the strength of a strong pitching performance from Nate Kloempken.

The Bulldogs’ senior hurler ran into some trouble in the third innings, allowing three Hoquiam runs to cross the plate, but settled in to retire 13 straight over the final four innings.

Montesano head coach Mike Osgood said of Kloempken: “He was starting off with off speed and was pitching backwards with some of the guys in the middle of the lineup. He did a great job of mixing his speeds.”

Bulldogs Carter Olsen and Payson Parker each hit doubles to lead Monte’s offense.

Montesano will play its last game of the regular season at 4 p.m. on Friday at Forks.

Hoquiam will finish up its regular season at home against Elma at 5 p.m. on Friday.

Life Christian sweeps North Beach

OCEAN SHORES — North Beach dropped both games of its doubleheader against Life Christian on Tuesday by scores of 18-5 and 11-7, respectively.

North Beach head coach David Hinchen said he wasn’t too disappointed in the losses and wished the season could go on a little longer since his team is starting to click.

“Its disappointing we’re getting to the end of the year and the kids are just starting to come around. Our problem is we’re giving up big innings but we’re playing in a lot of close games,” he said.

North Beach will close out its regular season with a doubleheader against South Bend at 3 p.m. today in Ocean Shores.

Ocosta throttles Chief Leschi

WESTPORT — The Wildcats scored 16 runs on 14 hits in game one followed by a 25-run output in game two to sweep a doubleheader over the Warriors 16-0 and 25-0 on Tuesday in Westport.

A big 11-run third inning secured Ocosta’s game one victory.

Leading 10-0 in the nightcap, the Wildcats scored 15 runs in the fifth inning to cruise to a 25-0 victory.

Chief Leschi’s defense committed 12 errors while its pitching staff allowed 14 free passes and hit ten batters in the twin bill.

South Bend sweeps Raymond

RAYMOND — South Bend sophomore Chase Flynn tallied six hits, three doubles and two home runs to lead the Indians to a doubleheader sweep over Raymond, 4-1 and 9-0.

Flynn went 3-for-4 wit two doubles in game one followed by a 3-for-4 performance in game two that included a double and two home runs. He also picked up the win in game one on the mound for South Bend.

“Flynn pitched a very good game. He is a tough kid to get a hit off of,” Raymond head coach Luke Abbott said. We were able to get some hits but couldn’t string enough together to get some runs on the board.”

Drew Rose earned the win in game two for the Indians (11-4, 9-3 Pacific 2B).

Raymond drops to 7-8 overall, 6-6 in the Pacific 2B League.

Ocosta steamrolls Chief Leschi

WESTPORT — The Wildcats ran their winning streak to 11 games with a pair of blowout victories over Chief Leschi on Tuesday.

Ocosta (14-3 overall, 10-0 Pacific 2B) outscored Chief Leschi 44-0 in the double header — 18-0 in game one and 26-0 in game two.

Kaylee Barnum went 2-for-3 with three runs and two RBI to lead a Wildcats offense that scored 18 runs on just seven hits, but benefited from 13 walks.

Barnum’s bat stayed hot in the second game, as she tallied a triple, a home run and four RBI. Her sister, Lillyan, went 2-for-3 with three runs succored in game two.

The Wildcats scored 26 runs on 14 hits and six Chief Leschi errors in the nightcap.

Monte perfect in league after beating Elma

ELMA — Montesano closed out a perfect league record with a 4-2 victory over Elma on Tuesday.

Elma (12-3, 5-2 Evergreen 1A) took an early 1-0 lead on Molly Johnston’s RBI single in the first inning.

Monte (14-1, 5-2) tied the game on Abi Parkin’s inside-the-park home run in the top of the third. The Bulldogs claimed the lead for good by scoring two runs in the top of the fourth inning, capped by Emma Jensen’s steal of home to make it a 3-1 ballgame.

Elma responded with a run in the bottom half of the frame on a single by Quin Mikel.

Montesano added an insurance run in the top of the seventh on a fielder’s choice RBI groundout by Matti Ekerson. Bulldog reliever Lindsay Pace made the lead stick, retiring 10 consecutive Elma hitters to end the game.

Hoquiam snaps five-game skid, beats Napavine

HOQUIAM — The Grizzlies’ bats came alive as they scored 12 runs on 13 hits to beat Napavine 12-3, snapping a five-game losing streak in the process.

Down 3-1 in the third inning, Hoquiam (8-7, 3-4 Evergreen 1A) outscored the Tigers 11-0 over the final four-and-a-half innings to earn the victory.

Tauni Hilliard picked up the win for Hoquiam, scattering two hits over four shutout innings. Kylee Bagwell had two hits and three RBI for the Grizzlies while teammate ReyLynn Dunn talied three hits for Hoquiam.

“It was nice to see the kids hit the ball tonight,” Hoquiam head coach Keith Reynvaan said. “We put everything together…It was a good team effort.”

The Grizzlies host Tenino at 4 p.m. today.

Raymond blows out South Bend in doubleheader

Raymond locked up the second spot in the league standings with two convincing wins over South Bend on Tuesday.

The Seagulls won by scores of 19-4 and 17-2.

Raymond head coach Jason Koski said he got a good effort from his players in the batters box and in the circle.

“(The) kids had a really good approach at the plate and we put the ball in play. Our pitchers were efficient tonight and didn’t face a lot of extra batters,” he said.

Raymond is now 11-4 overall, 8-2 in the Pacific 2B League.

South Bend drops to 8-4 overall and 4-4 in league.

NASELLE — The Comets defeated the Chitwins 21-6 in a Pacific 2B League matchup on Tuesday in Naselle.

The Chitwins scored all six of their runs in the second inning.

Tahola’s Teresa Billie had a double and 3 RBI in the game.

Aberdeen beats Rochester

ROCHESTER — The Bobcats overcame a soggy course and fast greens to earn a 45-40 (Stableford scoring) win over host Rochester on Tuesday.

McKayla Waltee led the way for Aberdeen with a team-high 13 points. Ryder Heikkila added 12 points for the Bobcats.

Aberdeen hosts Centralia at 3:30 p.m.on Thursday.

HOQUIAM — Four Montesano golfers shot below 50 as the Bulldogs beat the Grizzlies 211-174 on Tuesday in Hoquiam.

Macey Wecker and Glory Grubb had the low rounds of the match for Monte, carding a 41 and 42, respectively.

Hoquiam was led by Bailey Smith, who shot a round of 50 over nine holes.

ABERDEEN — Aleeta Pratt defeated Black Hills’ Emma Prybyliski 6-1, 6-0 to give the Bobcats their only match win of the meet as Aberdeen lost to the Wolves 5-1 on Tuesday.

Aberdeen claims 2nd in league after beating Rochester

ROCHESTER — Down 1-0 at the half, the Bobcats scored four straight goals in the second stanza and eventually defeated Rochester 4-2 on Tuesday.

After allowing a goal just eight minutes into the game, the Bobcats roared back in the second half. Goals by Hulizes Chavez (45th minute), Johnny Pizano (52nd), Luiz Martinez (58th) and Luis Garcia (65th) gave Aberdeen a 4-1 lead before a late Rochester goal made it a 4-2 final.

With the win, Aberdeen is 11-4 overall and their 7-3 league record is good enough for second place in the Evergreen 2A.

“I am so proud of our boys,” Aberdeen head coach Larry Fleming said. “Finishing second in the league after starting league play at 1-2 is a great accomplishment.”

Aberdeen will host Ridgefield at 1 p.m. on Saturday in the first round of the 2A District playoffs.

Monte shut out by Forks

Montesano’s season came to an end on Wednesday with a 2-0 loss to Forks on senior night.

The Bulldogs played a competitive game with the league-leading Forks and split possession with their opponent for most of the game.

Monte even had a good opportunity to score when Connor Parkinson got the ball on a breakaway but couldn’t finish on the play after pulling his hamstring on the sprint downfield.

Forks scored the eventual game-winning goal shortly thereafter in the 37th minute and the Spartans played well defensivly to earn the shutout.

Monte head coach Rick Denholm liked his team efforts in the loss.

“We pretty much held our own, we had some good opportunities but couldn’t get it in the back of then net,” he said.

He also mentioned that he was thankful for all the hard work of his seniors on the team.
