Montesano and Hoquiam renewed their long-standing rivalry as the Grizzlies hosted the Bulldogs on both the soccer pitch and volleyball court to highlight Tuesday’s local prep sports action.

Montesano 3, Hoquiam 0
Two first half goals from Anna Ayers lifted Montesano past Hoquiam 3-0 in rivalry game at Olympic Stadium on Tuesday.
Ayres scored in the 21st minute on a cross from Brooke Streeter followed by a goal from Lexi Lovell (Zoee Lisherness assist) in stoppage time of the first half to give Monte a 2-0 lead at the break.
Ayres added another goal in the 60th minute when she side-stepped a defender inside the box and ripped a low shot inside the left post for a 3-0 Bulldogs lead.
Despite giving up three goals, Hoquiam keeper Jade Cox came away with 11 saves on the night.
“We’re moving the ball around a lot and talking and made lots of good runs,” Ayers said. “We played well and I’m excited for this season, it’s going to be a good one.”
While Montesano (8-0-1 overall, 1-0 Evergreen 1A) did well to keep the ball away from Hoquiam in the second half, Bulldogs head coach Fidel Sanchez said his team had some trouble initially with the way Hoquiam closed down passing lanes on a relatively narrow field.
“We did what we had to do but every time we come here we get caught up in the narrow field and the dirt on the side,” he said. “Hoquiam does a good job making you play how they want you to play on this field, but we overcame everything we needed to overcome.”
Hoquiam (5-3-1, 0-1) tried to send players forward in the second half but the Grizzlies couldn’t connect on any of their passes into the box.
Grizzlies head coach Drew Grannemann said the team’s strategy worked for the most part despite the loss.
“Game-plan wise, we did what we needed to do but there were some crosses we couldn’t get a head or a foot on it,” he said.
Montesano 2 1 — 3
Hoquiam 0 0 — 0
Centralia 4, Aberdeen 0
Aberdeen got off to less than ideal start to their league part of the schedule as they fell to 4-0 at Centralia (2-5, 1-0) on Tuesday.
“We had numerous chances but didn’t put any quality shots on goal,” said Aberdeen head coach Larry Fleming. “We were taking a poor first touch and didn’t defend as well as we should have.”
Forward Abby Bradt and midfielder Chase Baller played well and generated some scoring chances in the loss.
Aberdeen’s junior varsity won their match against Centralia 2-1.
Aberdeen will face WF West on Thursday at 7 p.m.
Aberdeen 0 0 – 0
Centralia 2 2 – 4
PREP VOLLEYBALL
Hoquiam 3, Montesano 0
The Hoquiam Grizzlies got a huge game from senior middle blocker Rylee Vonhof as they earned a straight-set league victory over Montesano on Tuesday in Hoquiam.
Hoquiam (4-4, 1-0 Evergreen 1A) took the first set 25-14 before Monte made a game out of it in the second and third sets. But the Grizzlies were too strong on the night and ended up taking the second and third frames, 25-22 and 25-21, respectively.
Vonhof had eight kills and four blocks, not necessarily eye-catching numbers but it was the intangibles she brought to the match that head coach Heather Bozich said made the difference.
“She was incredible tonight at the net,” Bozich said of her 5-foot-11 senior. “She was extremely disruptive and caused a lot of problems (for Monte). … She had an all around amazing match tonight.”
Vonhof wasn’t the only Grizzly with a solid performance. Elyse Goulet had 12 kills to lead Hoquiam while ReyLynn Dunn had 23 digs and Kacey Pelan added 28 assists for the Grizzlies.
“This was the best we’ve played this season,” Bozich said. “We had energy the entire match. We communicated on every ball. Everything came together and everyone contributed.”
Montesano (3-4, 0-1) was led by Janessa Otterstetter’s 19 assists and Jessica Stanfield’s 10 kills.
Bulldogs head coach said too many mistakes hurt Monte’s chances for victory.
“We had a lot of unforced errors and mentally we struggled to stay in the game,” she said.

PREP TENNIS
Aberdeen 3, Black Hills 3 (AHS wins 49-38 on games)
Aberdeen got its first 2A Evergreen win of the season in a close matchup with Black Hills on Tuesday with the help of three wins in the double matches.
The teams each won three matches but Aberdeen won the tiebreaker, 49-38, when the number of games won was tallied.
Aberdeen head coach Andrew Duffy said his doubles teams are improving and gave the Bobcats the edge.
“It was a good day on the courts today for the Bobcats doubles teams,” he said. “The number one doubles team had their best outing yet and beat a formidable Black Hills team in straight sets. The freshman singles players continue to get better each outing.”
Black Hills drops to 1-5 on the season with the loss.

PREP GOLF
Hoquiam 164, Kalama 195
The Hoquiam Grizzlies are proving to be just as tough on the road as they are at home.
Led by Brayden Dayton’s match-low score of 39, Hoquiam improved to 7-0 on the season with a win over Kalama on Tuesday at Lewis River Golf Course.
Hoquiam’s team depth was once again too much for their opponents to handle. Joining Dayton to round out the Grizzlies team score (which is compiled by taking the top four scores out of six golfers) were Josh Burgher (41), Michael Jump (41) and Tayte Witherbee (43).
Kalama had three players with a team-low score of 48, which was the same score as Hoquiam’s Tyler Sundstrom and three shots back from the Grizzlies Noah Sudderth. Both Sundstrom and Sudderth’s scores were scratched from the Grizzlies final score.
While their depth has been a strength for Hoquiam the entire season, Grizzlies head coach Larry Dublanko is focused on his team’s play on away courses.
“This was a rather short course that required some discipline,” he said. “We need to think a little more about the courses we are unfamiliar with. … We don’t always have to be long off the tee on these short, tight courses. … But it’s good to play a course we are unfamiliar with and shoot a low score.”
Hoquiam will play another short, claustrophobic course when they take on King’s Way Christian at Club Green Meadows at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday.
Hoquiam (164) — Dayton (39), Burgher (41), Jump (41), Witherbee (43)
Kalama (195) — Matt Buller (48), Todd Tabor (48), Joey Reed (48), Colby Tucker (51)
