Ocosta 2, Onalaska 1 (Ocosta wins shootout 2-1)

Ocosta goalkeeper Kristi Raffelson stopped four of five shots in a winner-take-all shootout and Teal Mitby set an all-time school assists record to lead the Wildcats to a thrilling 2-1 victory over Onalaska on Monday at Onalaska High School.

Onalaska (6-4) took the early lead with a goal in the 19th minute before Ocosta senior forward Kennedy Merino took a cross from Mitby and scored on a low, hard shot to knot the game up at 1-1.

The game remained tied at 1-1 throughout the second half and into overtime, as both defenses tightened, forcing an overtime shootout.

Ocosta’s first two shots were saved, but Raffelson did the same, stopping both of the Loggers’ first two strikes at the net.

Mitby then converted on Ocosta’s third shootout attempt and kept the lead when Raffelson stopped Onalaska’s third shot.

Onalaska converted their fourth shot to tie the shootout at 1-1.

Ryann Raffelson scored on the Wildcats’ fifth attempt, giving her older sister Kristi a chance to give Ocosta a walk-off win with a save.

But a save wouldn’t be needed, as the Loggers fifth and final shot sailed high over the crossbar to give Ocosta the victory.

Ocosta moves to 8-2 overall on the season with the win.

With her assist in the first half, Mitby became the Cats’ all-time assist leader with 29, passing Stephanie King, who set the record between 2002-04.
