Five Twin Harbors golfers advance to state meet

Five of the finest Twin Harbors prep golfers advanced to the 1A State Championship Golf Tournament in May.

Elma’s Grant Vessey and Robby Allen, Montesano’s Golton Grubb and Ayhden Sauer, and Hoquiam’s Riley Montoure made the cut and qualified for the state tournament at the conclusion of the second day of the 1A District 4 Championships on Tuesday at the Tumwater Valley Golf Course.

Leading the way was Vessey, who posted a score of 79 over 18 holes of golf in Round 2, bringing his two-day total to 155 (plus-11) to place third overall.

Allen wasn’t far behind, finishing with a score of 162 (83-79) to place fifth in the district.

Grubb was 20-over par for the tournament, finishing his second round with two-day score of 164 (82-82) to place seventh.

Montoure was two strokes back of Grubb with a score of 166 (77-89) to take eighth place.

Sauer edged Seton Catholic’s Caden Haapala by one stroke to claim the ninth and final state-qualifying spot, carding an 84 on Tuesday to finish in ninth place with a two-day total of 169.

Missing the cut were Elma’s Cason Seaberg (85-87-172, 12th), Kohan Morrison (87-92-179, 15th), Brody Palmer (95-86-181, 17th) and Luke Schneider (92-103-195, 21st) as the Eagles placed second as a team in the district behind Seton Catholic.

“This district tournament was much more competitive than the past few years, with the scores that came in yesterday, we knew we had to be on our A-game to push some kids through to the state tournament,” Elma head coach Collin McMaster said. “With the cut line dropping 11 strokes from last year, we were fortunate to get two boys through and I’m very proud of them for that. I’m also very pleased with our team taking second overall in districts. What an honor to cap off a great fall season for Elma. Hats off to Seton Catholic, they’re a very solid team and proved that this weekend.”

Montesano’s Caden Grubb (97-86-186, 18th) also missed the cut.

Seton Catholic’s Jacob Parker won the district title with a 2-over par 146 (70-76), beating Tenino’s David Dallaire (72-78-150) by four strokes.

The state tournament will be held May 21-22 at the Riverside Golf Club in Chehalis.

“We showed really good ball control, made good decisions on offense and our back row kept us in rallies really well,” Jewell said. “We were focused on our game plan and we executed it well.”

Jewell credited Emily Howell and Berklee Morley for their perfect service games and Kyndal Koski, Mackenzie Kuiken and Kassie Koski for their stellar defense.
