BOYS PREP SOCCER
Aberdeen 2, W.F. West 0
Aberdeen won for the fifth-straight game with a 2-0 victory over W.F. West on Tuesday in Chehalis.
The Bobcats (8-2 overall, 5-1 2A Evergreen) applied pressure early on and eventually scored when senior forward Freddy Hernandez got past a Bearcats defender, drove to the end line and second a pass across the mouth of the goal to the head of senior striker Marc Avila, who flicked the ball past the oncoming WFW goalkeeper in the 16th minute.
With approximately five minutes left in the first half, Avila caught the Bearcats keeper too far off his line and sent a shot over his head for a goal from 35-yards out.
Aberdeen keeper Grady Osina and Bobcats defenders in senior Angel Espinosa, Cris Lopez, Ryker Scott and Edgar Ceja thwarted the occasional W.F. West counter-attack in the second half to preserve the shutout.
“We really picked it up this game, controlling the ball pretty well on the uneven surface,” Bobcats head coach Larry Fleming said. “Our defense was sound and we were tough in the air and physical on the ball. Great league win against another tough opponent.”
With the victory, Aberdeen sits in second place in the 2A Evergreen Conference with a 5-1 league record and 13 points, just three points behind first-place Tumwater, which the Cats beat on April 15.
Aberdeen’s JV team won 3-0 on Tuesday, with Luis Campos scoring two goals and Julio Hernandez also scoring for the Bobcats.
Aberdeen takes on Shelton at 7 p.m. on Thursday at Stewart Field in Aberdeen.
