Tumwater 35, Aberdeen 3

Aberdeen played its most competitive game against 2A powerhouse Tumwater in years, but missed opportunities proved costly in a 35-3 loss on Friday in Tumwater.

Aberdeen (3-3, 2-1 2A Evergreen) drove into the Thunderbirds red zone on multiple occasions, but failed to come away with a touchdown, scoring just three points on a 30-yard Kenny Dawson field goal in the second quarter.

“We were inside the red zone three times in the first half and came away with three points, very disappointing,” Aberdeen head coach Todd Bridge said. “But the players played hard throughout the game. Still scrapping at the end to make sure Tumwater didn’t score a cheap on on us, and for that, I and the rest of the coaches are very proud of our players.”

Aberdeen trailed 21-3 at the half.

The Bobcats were led by senior running back Jeremy Sawyer, who rushed for 96 yards on 20 carries.

Junior quarterback Grady Springer went 5-for-19 for 47 passing yards and rushed for 31 yards.

Springer and senior defensive back Kyle Miller each recorded an interception in the game.

“We knew coming in we had to play a flawless ballgame and that just didn’t happen,” Bridge said. “Drive after drive, many of our younger players — having to play due to injuries — did their best, but when we’re putting freshmen out there against Tumwater, well then you got to get lucky and that just didn’t happen tonight.”

Aberdeen hosts Rochester at 7 p.m. on Friday.

The Eagles (2-4) outgained South Whidbey (6-0) 449-342 and is the first team to score more than 30 points against the Falcons this season.

Elma responded when Studer hit senior receiver Gibson Cain with a 44-yard TD pass to cut the lead to 38-35 late in the fourth quarter.

Due to injuries, just 15 players suited up for Ocosta, including five offensive linemen. One of those offensive linemen — Shaheed Lewis — scored on a 1-yard run for the Wildcats.

Lewis led the Wildcats defense with 10 tackles (six solo).

Figueroa (9 tackles, 6 solo), Martin (9 tckl., 5 solo, fumble recovery), Agramon (8 tckl., 5 solo) and Garrett (5 tckl, 1 solo, INT) also made significant contributions to the Wildcats defense.

Lake Quinault 55, Wishkah Valley 26

Lake Quinault continues to be the team to beat in the 1B Coastal League, remaining undefeated after a 55-26 win over Wishkah Valley on Saturday at Lake Quinault High School.

The Elks (4-0, 3-0 1B Coastal) led 14-6 in a close first quarter as the Loggers (1-4, 1-3) held the Lake Quinault run game in check by frequently blitzing.

“They gave us a run for our money and hit us in the mouth in the first quarter,” Elks head coach Melvyn Houtz said. “Wishkah shut down our running game. … I like to pound the rock, but once they took that away, we had to go to the air. Once we figured it out, it was all over.”

In the second quarter, the Elks took to the air and found paydirt, scoring 34 points in the frame on three touchdown passes from quarterback Jessy Ferry, to put the game out of reach by halftime.

Elks running back Cody Perry had over 150 yards receiving to go along with three touchdown receptions in the game.

Ferry also ran for two touchdowns in the game.

Wishkah was led by quarterback Matthew Erickson and receiver Enrique Guzman, who combined for 168 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the first half.

But the Elks defense began to get to Erickson, sacking him six times, forcing a fumble and recording two interceptions.

Erickson went 14-for-32 for 182 yards in the contest.

Guzman went under center in the second half and passed for 84 yards (4-for-8 passing) and threw touchdown passes to Boady Dhooghe and Kohl Brandner.

Guzman (6 tackles) and Erickson (5 tckl., forced fumble, INT) led the Wishkah defense.

Wishkah hosts Clallam Bay for homecoming at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
