PREP BASEBALL

Montesano 5, Tenino 2

Montesano seized control of the race for first place in the 1A Evergreen League with a 5-2 win over Tenino in the first game of a doubleheader on Friday at Vessey Field in Montesano.

Needing to win one of Friday’s two scheduled games to take the season series over the Beavers, Monte (11-2 overall, 5-1 1A Evergreen) scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first on a two-out, two-run single off the bat of first baseman Kole Kjesbu.

An inning later, Monte took a 3-0 lead when Mason Fry – on board with a leadoff walk – raced home to score on a Toren Crites double to center field.

A double by outfielder Tyson Perry scored Fry for a 4-0 Bulldogs lead in the bottom of the fourth.

Monte added an insurance run in the sixth when Crites scored on Perry’s second RBI double of the game.

Montesano starting pitcher Kolson Hendrickson held Tenino scoreless through six innings, scattering five hits and three walks while striking out 13 Beavers batters.

Bulldogs reliever Dennis Churchill ran into some trouble in the seventh, allowing two earned runs on three hits and two walks in the frame, but got Jude Leitch to fly out to Perry in center to end the game.

Tenino 14, Montesano 10

Montesano lost a high-scoring, back-and-forth contest 14-10 to Tenino in the second game of a twin bill on Friday in Montesano.

In the rubber match between the top two teams in the 1A Evergreen League combined for 22 hits, eight errors and six lead changes.

After Tenino scored a pair of runs in the top of the first, Monte responded with four runs in the bottom of the frame, capped by a two-run double by Kole Kjesbu.

In the third, the Beavers took a 6-4 lead followed by a five-run Montesano rally capped by a bases-loaded walk to Caden Grubb for a 9-6 lead.

Two key errors by the Bulldogs defense led to a four-run Tenino top half of the sixth, with Monte tying the game on Mason Fry’s bunt single to score Kolson Hendrickson, tying the game at 10-10 heading to the seventh.

But Monte’s bullpen faltered as Tenino added four more runs, paced by a two-run single by Mason Metcalf.

Monte reliever Toren Crites took the loss, allowing 10 runs – six earned – on nine hits and four walks with three strikeouts in 4 1-3 innings pitched.

The Bulldogs sit in first place in the 1A Evergreen League, a half-game in front of Rochester and are a full game up on Tenino.

Monte takes on Hoquiam at 4 p.m. on Tuesday in Montesano.

Aberdeen 11, Centralia 0

Aberdeen scored seven runs in the first inning en route to an 11-0 win on Friday at Pioneer Park in Aberdeen.

The Bobcats (5-4, 2-3 2A Evergreen) took command of the game early on three walks, two hit batters, two sacrifice fly balls and three singles, highlighted by a two-run liner to left off the bat of outfielder Donovaan Hedgpeth.

Aberdeen added two runs in the bottom of the second on a Hedgpeth RBI sac fly and Land’n Purdy crossing the plate when Trevon Maynard was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

A Bubba Jones RBI sac fly in the third and a run on a Chad Fretts fielder’s choice groundout in the fourth rounded out the Bobcats’ offensive output.

Six different Bobcats collected a hit in the game and Aberdeen drew six walks, laid down two sac bunts and had four sac flies in the game.

Pitcher Mason Hill earned the win, allowing just one hit with three strikeouts in four innings pitched.

Aberdeen reliever Ryder Creamer pitched a scoreless fifth, allowing no hits or walks with one strikeout.

The Cats are in fourth place in the 2A Evergreen Conference and sit two games behind Shelton for third place in the league standings.

Aberdeen takes on W.F. West at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Pioneer Park.

Rochester 6, Elma 1

Elma dropped the first game of a doubleheader with Rochester 6-1 on Friday in Rochester.

The Eagles (3-8, 1-6 1A Evergreen) scored their lone run of the game when T.J. Dunlap – on board with a leadoff walk – came in to score on a passed ball in the top of the fourth to trail the Warriors (8-4, 6-3) 3-1.

Outfielder Isaac McGaffey went 3 for 4 with a stolen base to lead Elma.

Brody Palmer also had a multi-hit game for the Eagles, going 2 for 3 with two singles.

Elma’s Bryston Crawford took the loss, allowing six runs – three earned – on five hits and four walks with three strikeouts in 3 1-3 innings pitched.

Rochester 5, Elma 4

Elma’s seventh-inning rally fell short in a 5-4 loss to Rochester in the second game of a doubleheader on Friday in Rochester.

The Eagles trailed 5-3 in the top of the seventh inning but rallied to within a run when Isaac McGaffey scored on one of nine Rochester errors.

But with two outs and the tying and go-ahead runs on base, Elma’s Cole Gustafson lined out to right fielder Tristan Nelson to end the game.

The two teams combined for 15 errors and eight unearned runs in the game.

Palmer took the loss for Elma despite allowing just one earned run and three hits with three walks and six strikeouts in five innings pitched.

Gustafson pitched one scoreless inning of relief without surrendering a hit or a walk with one strikeout.

Elma hosts Tenino at 5 p.m. on Tuesday.

Bremerton 12, Hoquiam 8

Too many errors spoiled a relatively solid pitcher performance in Hoquiam’s 12-8 loss to Bremerton on Saturday at Olympic Stadium in Hoquiam.

The Grizzlies (3-6) committed six errors in the game, turning what was a 3-2 lead after three innings of play into a loss as Bremerton scored 10 runs in the fourth through sixth innings.

“We need to make the routine plays and support our pitchers,” said Hoquiam head coach Steve Jump, who commended the pitching performances of Talan Abbott and Ethan Byron. “Abbott and Byron showed promise on the mound.”

Ryan Pullar and Nite Turpin had two hits apiece for Hoquiam.

The Grizzlies resume league play at Montesano at 4 p.m. on Tuesday.
