Montesano 13, River Ridge 3
Montesano opened its season with a six-inning 13-3 mercy-rule victory over River Ridge on Wednesday at the Regional Athletic Complex in Lacey.
The Bulldogs (1-0 overall) scored four runs in each of the second, third and sixth innings in the route over the Hawks (1-1).
Monte opened up a 4-0 lead in the top of the second highlighted by run-scoring doubles from third baseman Toren Crites and center fielder Zach Timmons.
The Bulldogs doubled the lead one frame later on a sacrifice fly by first baseman Kole Kjesbu and another two-run double off the bat of Crites to go up 8-0.
Montesano right fielder Dennis Churchill led off the fifth with a single and later came around to score on an error to put the Dogs up 9-0.
Montesano starting pitcher Tyson Perry took a no-hitter into the bottom of the fifth before running into trouble with a leadoff walk followed by a hit batter.
After striking out the next two River Ridge batters, Perry lost the no-hitter and the shutout when Jalon Fulton tripled to right to score two runs and came in to score on a Montesano error on the play, making it a 9-3 game.
But the Bulldogs responded with four runs in the top of the sixth, highlighted by a Timmons RBI single as the first four batters of the inning reached base.
Timmons took the mound in the bottom of the frame and struck out the side to complete the Montesano victory.
Crites and Timmons each had two hits to lead the Bulldogs, which scored seven unearned runs on five Hawks errors in the game.
