Pacwest and Sound View keep tourney hopes alive

Pacwest and Sound View earn wins in loser-out games to keep seasons alive in 8-10 state little league tourney

The hope for state tournament hardware is still alive for Pacwest and Sound View after Tuesday’s loser-out contests at the Washington State 8-10 Baseball Tournament at Failor Field in Aberdeen.

In the first game of the evening, Pacwest used an early lead to out duel Sedro Woolley 10-8. Pacwest put up three runs in the first inning and never trailed on the way to victory.

The nightcap had far less twists and turns as Sound View dominated the game from the first pitch to take down Walla Walla Valley 15-2. Sound View flashed plenty of leather in the contest and had offense to spare to back up the strong defensive effort.

Pacewest and Sound View will now face off in another loser-out contest at 5 p.m. on Thursday with that team advancing to play the winner of the 7:15 p.m. game on Thursday between West Valley and North Bothell.

Pacwest 10, Sedro Woolley 8

Pacwest’s bats came alive early with a string of three hits in a row to start the game and give just the offensive kick start it needed. Devin Tep led off the game with a single back up the middle for Pacwest, followed by a double from Layne Bennett. Tep came around to score moments later on a single by Quincy Brown to put Pacwest on the scoreboard. Both Bennett and Brown would score later in the inning.

Pacwest would only have five more hits in the game, but took advantage of walks and errors to stay just ahead of Sedro Wolley for the remainder of the contest.

Sedro Woolley would capitalize on its share of Pacwest’s miscues as well. Only two of Sedro Woolley’s eight runs reached base on hits. Sherman Griffin got Sedro Woolley on the scoreboard in the second inning with a single back up the middle before reaching third on two consecutive wild pitches and coming home on an error.

The two teams traded blows back and forth, both scoring one run in the third and two runs in the fourth before Pacwest edged out in front for good in the fifth inning. After Landon Bennett scored on a double steal, Layne Bennett connected for a double to drive in Tep and cap the scoring for Pacwest.

Sedro Woolley was able to score two runs off errors in the sixth inning, but the rally came up short.

Sound View 15, Walla Walla Valley 2

In the nightcap, Sound View was able to grab the early lead, but Walla Walla struggled to get rolling offensively. While Walla Walla was able to make solid contact on the ball, Sound View made just one error in the field and stayed in control throughout.

The first inning set the tone for the entire contest. Sound View was sparked in the first inning when Jack Luxenberg connected on a triple. Luxenberg’s hit would be the only one of the inning for Sound View, but two errors and two walks by Walla Walla turned into three more runs to give Sound View all the offense it would need. When Walla Walla came up to bat, pitcher Riley Newman was able to get out of the inning in just five pitches. Newman and Kody Smerer combined to throw the complete game in less than 80 total pitches.

Both of Walla Walla’s runs came with the help of Daniel Balof. The young catcher doubled to score Colton McCollaugh in the third inning then singled and scored in the fifth inning for Walla Walla.

Sound View led 7-2 going into the sixth inning before it slammed the door shut on Walla Walla’s season with eight insurance runs. Walla Walla became more like Walka Walka with Sound View seven walks in the inning and scoring each one of the runners.
