Napavine thumps PWV, 41-7

CENTRALIA — Napavine has well-established itself as the king of the pride in Southwest Washington 2B football.

On Friday night, the Tigers put their marks into a state 2B football semifinal berth by vanquishing rival Pe Ell-Willapa Valley, 41-7, in a state 2B quarterfinal contest in Centralia.

Senior quarterback Wyatt Stanley threw for four touchdowns — three of them to Jordan Purvis — and connected on 16-for-24 attempts for 280 yards to drive Napavine (12-0).

Senior running back Kaelin Jurek capped his high school gridiron career with 136 yards and one touchdown as PWV’s season comes to an end at 9-3.

“I’m going to lose about 3-4 big players, like Kaelin, but we started three freshmen tonight as well,” PWV head coach Josh Fluke said. “Kaelin worked hard until the very end of the game. He is a heck of a player. Everyone got experience this year and our goal is to gear up again and get back to (the state playoffs) again.”

Napavine, which has been top-ranked in the state 2B media poll all season, has knocked off three Southwest Washington 2B Coastal Division teams, two of them — PWV and North Beach — in the postseason. Raymond met Napavine to kick off the season in Napavine.

All three teams experienced the same thing — when Napavine’s offense is firing on all cylinders, it is tough to stop.

The Tigers scored on all four first-half drives, including a 16-play, 76-yard march that included two converted two fourth-down plays to start the scoring midway through the first quarter. In all, Napavine scored on six of its seven drives.

“The main thing that happened is what we talked about all week — don’t give up the big-play ball,” Fluke said. “We gave up the big-play ball and a couple of fourth-down plays as well. We didn’t tackle well and we went over that all week. The two things we didn’t want to do, we did. The thorn in our side all year has been our pass defense. It showed again tonight.”

Stanley was pivotal in the Tigers’ six scoring drives. He hit only five passes in 11 attempts on their first drive, but a 15-yard pass to Noah Lantz and a 16-yard keeper kept the drive alive. In the end, a quick 5-yard touchdown pass to Purvis started the scoring at 7-0.

Pe Ell-Willapa Valley nearly answered Napavine’s first score with a touchdown of its own. On a drive to the Tigers’ 5-yard line, Jurek got 10 yards, but lost the football to Napavine to end the drive prematurely. Napavine responded with a 95-yard drive on seven plays, all but 13 yards on Stanley’s arm. Purvis caught a 38-yard touchdown pass for a 13-0 margin early in the second quarter.

Cole VanWyck gave Napavine a change of pace with big runs in the second quarter. The junior running back scored from 1 and 25 yards out for a 27-0 lead and finished 51 yards, all in the quarter.

With 3-plus minutes left in the first half, the Titans looked for a momentum-grabbing touchdown before halftime. A face-mask penalty and an 18-yard pass from Matt Pearson to Ryan Shepherd got PWV down to the Napavine 9-yard line. However, time ran out for halftime before the Titans could get a shot at the end zone.

Napavine punctuated the contest with two quick touchdowns in the third quarter to bring the mercy-rule running clock into play with 4:46 left in the quarter.

Stanley connected with Mac Fagerness for a 35-yard pass play to set up a 17-yard touchdown fade pass to Purvis and a 34-0 lead. Stanley finished his night with a 40-yard touchdown pass to Lantz for the 41-0 lead.

PWV got a measure of pride back in the final drive of the contest. Behind Jurek, the Titans scored their lone touchdown on Jurek’s 3-yard plunge with 34.6 seconds remaining. Jurek ran 52 yards on the drive and finished with more than 1,800 yards rushing on the season.

Defensively, Jurek finished with 12 tackles and Tyson Nissell added seven tackles for PWV.
