Montesano seniors Vanna Prom and Maia Young were named to the first and second team, respectively, as the 1A Evergreen League announced its all-league tennis team for the 2023 season on Tuesday.
Prom was named to the league’s top squad after leading Monte to an 11-1 overall record – six of those 5-0 shutouts – to tie with Stevenson for the league titles.
Prom went 10-2 on the season – with her only losses coming against league MVP Sofia Spencer of Stevenson – with all 10 of her victories coming in straight sets. In her 10 victories, Prom dropped a mere 16 games, an average of 1.6 per match.
Prom placed second in the district after winning back-to-back matches with no more than a 15 minute break before falling to Spencer in the district championship.
Young also had a sparkling season as Monte’s No.2 singles player. The senior finished the season with an 11-2 record, including a 6-0, 6-1 first-round victory at the district tournament before falling to Spencer, the eventual district champion.
Montesano’s Emily Schallon went 6-3 this season as Monte’s No. 3 singles player.
Montesano’s top doubles team of Belle Estrada and Karissa Otterstetter finished the regular season with a 9-2 record and advanced to the doubles district championship before being defeated by Stevenson’s top pair.
Prom and Estrada/Otterstetter will enter the state tournament as first alternatives.
Bulldogs Ruby Jones (9-1), Hayden Prentice (9-1), Marie Taylor (9-2) and Izzy Taylor (8-3) all competed on Monte’s No. 2 doubles team, with Jones playing in all varsity matches while Prentice, Marie Taylor and Izzy Taylor splitting time between varsity and junior varsity.
Monte placed second overall in the team standings with 14 points, the first time the Bulldogs have placed second in head coach Theresa Helland’s 23-year career.
“I’m just so proud of the grit, determination and lots of firsts for the Montesano tennis program that this team accomplished this season,” Helland said. “We surprised and surpassed what anybody in our league thought this team would accomplish this season and it felt great. What a great group of ladies I had the privilege of coaching.”
