Montesano girls track teams wins third straight district team championship

Led by Lilly Causey’s two district titles, Bulldogs establish dynasty with third straight title

Montesano’s girls track and field team won its third consecutive district title at the 1A District 4 Championships on Thursday at Seton Catholic High School in Vancouver.

The Bulldogs girls squad scored 113 points, eight points better than second-place Castle Rock to win their third championship in as many seasons.

Senior sprinter Lilly Causey led Monte by sweeping both the short sprint races.

Causey needed to run personal-bests to win both the 100 and 200-meter races as her top six opponents in the 100 and two four in the 200 all recorded PR times.

Causey ran a 12.70 to win the 100 and a 26.25 to cross the line first in the 200.

“Lilly did an outstanding job the whole day,” Montesano head coach Doug Schupbach. “Probably one of the best performances we had with her.”

Monte senior Ashlyn Devereaux placed second in the javelin with a throw of 112-4 and sophomore Samantha Schweppe placed second in the 3200 with a time of 12:21.28.

The Bulldogs 4×200-relay team of Hailey McElroy, MaKenzie Eaton, Olson and Causey placed third to qualify with a time of 1:48.84.

“We did an outstanding job both boys and girls. I’m extremely pleased with this and look forward to going to state,” Schupbach said.

Hoquiam had two district champions as senior Chloe Kennedy won the high jump with a leap of 5-0 and senior Katrina Jones cleared a personal-best 8-9 to win the pole vault title.

The boys competition was dominated by Hoquiam’s Timmy Higgins.

The Grizzlies distance runner won championships in the 800 (2:01.55), the 1600 (4:40.24) and the 3200 (10:23.36 PR) as the only boys competitor to win three events.

Elma’s Elijah Flores and Montesano’s Gabe Bodwell each won championships in two events on Thursday.

Bodwell placed first in both the javelin (166-6) and high jump (6-2), both with personal-best marks.

Flores swept the long jump and triple jump with marks of 20-2 (PR) and 39-9, respectively.
