Montesano falls to Lynden in season-opening softball matchup

Also: Monte boys soccer wins second game in as many days, blasts Stevenson 7-0

Montesano opened its season with a 6-3 loss to Lynden at the 2022 Auburn Riverside Fastpitch Invitational on Saturday at Auburn Riverside High School.

Reigning 1A State champion Montesano couldn’t overcome allowing five runs in the bottom of the second off a leadoff home run, three singles, two errors and a hit batter.

The Bulldogs scored on an Addi Kersker ground out in the top of the fifth, scoring Adda Potts and plated two runs in the seventh when Ali Parkin tripled to score Potts and Reghann Fairbairn.

Faribairn took the loss, allowing two earned runs on nine hits with a pair of strikeouts in three innings pitched.

Riley Timmons pitched the final three innings for Monte, holding Lynden scoreless on one hit and five strikeouts.

Kersker (2-4, 3B, 2RBI) and Parkin (2-4, RBI) had multi-hit games for the Bulldogs.

Naselle 9, Pe Ell-Willapa Valley 5

Pe Ell-Willapa Valley fell behind early and couldn’t complete the comeback in a 9-5 season-opening loss to Naselle on Saturday in Naselle.

PWV (0-1) trailed after Naselle scored six runs in the bottom of the second inning on four hits, three walks and an error.

Trailing 8-0 in the top of the fifth, the Titans scored five runs — including two runs on the same error — to get back into the game.

Naselle added an insurance run in the bottom half of the inning to round out the scoring.

The Titans collected five hits in the game — all singles — against four Naselle pitchers.

PWV starting pitcher Hudson Barnum took the loss, allowing one earned run on a hit and four walks with six strikeouts in three innings pitched.

Montesano 7, Stevenson 0

Montesano won its second-straight game in as many days to start the season, routing Stevenson 7-0 on Saturday at Stevenson High School.

Three Montesano players scored two goals apiece on Saturday with Felix Romero, Levi Clements and Luke Clements each hitting the back of the net on multiple occasions.

Omar Barrera added a goal for the Bulldogs.

“Lots of scoring and lots of chances,” Montesano head coach Fidel Sanchez said of the game. “Good day all around for us.”

Montesano takes on Hoquiam at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Sea Breeze Oval in Hoquiam.

Local teams impress at Rainier Icebreaker

Led by a first-place finish from the Montesano Bulldogs girls team, several Twin Harbors area teams placed high upon the leaderboard at the first large regional prep track and field meet of the season — the Rainier Icebreaker Invitational — on Saturday in Rainier.

The Montesano girls team finished with 88 points paced by event wins from Jaiden Morrison (400, 1:06.64), Jaiden King (100 hurdles, 18.23) and Ashlyn Devereaux (javelin, 102-04; triple jump, 30-03).

Monte also picked up points with its 4×100 relay team (Sierra Birdsall, Lilly Causey, Morrison, Sam Roundtree), which placed second with a time of 55.07 and additional third-place finishes by Morrison (100, 13.79) and King (300 hurdles, 53.94).

Hoquiam also had a good day at the track, placing third with 68 points led by one of the state’s top girls throwers in the 1A class, Tyara Straka. Straka cruised to victories in both the shot put (37-04.75) and discus (119-11).

The Grizzlies also got top-three finishes from Kristina Goulet (400, 1:09.76, 3rd) and Jane Roloff (3200, 13:19.62, 3rd).

Willapa Valley’s Lauryn McGough won the pole vault by 2.5 feet with a mark of 10-06 to lead the Vikings to a sixth place finish with 42.5 points. McGough also took second in the javelin with a throw of 99-07.

Willapa Valley’s Hannah Hamilton placed second behind Straka in the shot put with a mark of 31-01.50.

Ocosta’s Mataya Straka took third in the shot put with a throw of 29-04.5, a personal-best. She also placed third in the discus with a PR-mark of 94-04.

Raymond’s Karsyn Freeman placed third in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 18.92.

North Beach’s Kaci Osborne placed third in the triple jump with a mark of 28-07.

In the boys competition, Ocosta led all Twin Harbors teams with 70 points to place fourth overall.

Twin brothers William and Matthew Idso did much of the damage for Ocosta.

William won the high jump with a leap of 5-08 and placed second in both the 100 (11.48) and 200 (23.31).

Matthew won the 400 (52.62) and placed third in the 100 (11.71) and 200 (23.31).

Ocosta’s Dylan Todd placed third in the 800 (2:16.48) and teammate Billy Jones placed second in the pole vault by clearing the bar at 12 feet.

Raymond’s Morgan Anderson won the 110-meter hurdles with a personal-best time of 16.58, nearly 2.5 seconds better than the next closest competitor. Anderson also had a third-place finish in the pole vault with a mark of 10-06.

Raymond’s boys 4×100 relay team (Isaac Schlueter, Jaxson Freeman, Daysa Sypaphay, Anderson) placed third with a time of 49.40.

The Seagulls placed eighth overall (31 points) with Montesano (30 points) and North Beach (23.5) in ninth and 10th, respectively.

South Bend’s Robby Stigall placed second in the discus with a personal-record throw of 131-11.

Montesano’s Gabe Bodwell took third in the javelin (128-01).

COLLEGE BASEBALL

Grays Harbor falls in weekend series against Olympic

The Grays Harbor Chokers lost two of three games to the Olympic Rangers over the weekend in Bremerton.

GHC lost the first game 4-2 on Saturday.

GHC (6-9 overall) had six hits in the game — all singles — and were led by first baseman Nolan Baugher (2-5, RBI) and right fielder Aaron Lano (2-3, R, SB).

Chokers starter Trevor Barth took the loss, allowing an earned run on six hits with three strikeouts and three walks in five innings pitched.

The second game of Saturday’s doubleheader was rained out.

On Sunday, GHC opened up a 6-0 lead after four innings en route to a 10-3 win in the opener.

Eight different Chokers collected base hits as Grays Harbor recorded 12 hits in the game, six for extra bases.

Second baseman Chase Cleveringa led GHC, going 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI.

Reese Shioji (2-5, R, RBI), Alex Zang (2-3, 3B, 2R, RBI) and Cameron Denny (2-4, 2B, 2R, RBI) had multi-hit games for the Chokers.

Colin Hoover (4.1 IP, 5H, 3ER, 7BB) picked up the win with reliever Camden Ryan (4.2 IP, H, 4K, BB) closing out the victory.

In Sunday’s nightcap, GHC trailed 6-5 after five innings and never caught up in a 10-6 loss.

Chokers outfielder Caleb Berry went 4-for-5 with a run with Baugher (2-4, R), Brody Rustemeyer (2-3, 2RBI) and Cameron Erickson (2-3, 2 R) also recording multiple base hits in the game.

Tyler Hooper took the loss for GHC, allowing five earned runs on six hits with three walks and two strikeouts on 3 1/3 innings pitched.

The Chokers will head east to face Yakima Valley for a four-game series starting next Saturday.
