After a couple of years of largely cross-state travel, Grays Harbor teams will stay in Southwest Washington for regional basketball competition this weekend.

Montesano’s boys (19-5) will take on district rival La Center (16-7) in a Class 1A regional contest scheduled for 8 p.m. Friday at Mark Morris High School in Longview. Both teams won their respective league championships, with La Center eventually capturing the District IV title as well.

The Bulldog girls (17-7) face Freeman (14-9) in a 1A regional set for 2 p.m. Saturday at Tumwater.

Taholah’s boys and girls will play back-to-back regional contests at Chehalis on Saturday night.

The district champion Chitwhin boys (18-3) take on Riverside Christian of Yakima (13-9) at 6 p.m., with Taholah’s girls (16-5) to follow against Northwest Yeshiva of Mercer Island (17-10) at 8 p.m.

All of the Harbor teams are slotted in the single-elimination portion of the bracket, which makes this weekend’s games as winner-to-state, loser-out affairs. The state 1A tournaments begin Feb. 28 in Yakima, with the 1B tourneys beginning the same date in Spokane.

Regional qualifiers ranked in the top eight in their classifications in state RPI ratings would be in the double-elimination bracket. Winners of those games advanced directly to the state quarterfinals. Losers would still qualify for state but would be placed in the single-elimination opening round. Montesano’s and Raymond’s girls advanced to state last year despite regional losses.

None of the Harbor’s regional qualifiers made the top eight in RPI rankings this year. Taholah’s boys just missed and will enter regionals as the ninth seed.

The Harbor clubs, however, fared well enough in RPI rankings to earn relatively high rankings in the single-elimination phase. Taholah’s boys and girls and Montesano’s girls will be the higher seeds in their respective contests and thus earned the right to play relatively close to home. The Bulldog girls received a significant boost in the RPI index by playing higher-ranked La Center and Elma at district.
