Volleyball: Monte, Hoquiam, Elma earn non-league wins

Bulldogs sweep Warriors

MONTESANO — Montesano made quick work of Rochester on Tuesday, defeating the Warriors 3-0 (25-4, 25-11, 25-14) in a non-league match at Bo Griffith Gym.

The Bulldogs took control of the match early and missed just two serves on the night.

“We came out with quite a bit of energy and we took care of the ball on our side of the net,” Monte coach Debbie Gibson said.

The Bulldogs were led by 16 kills by Shayla Floch and 14 kills by Jordan Spradlin. Hannah Hatcher had 29 assists on the night as Floch and Hatcher both were perfect in service. Josie Talley had 10 digs and two aces for the Bulldogs.

Montesano (4-0) will travel to Yakima to take part in the SunDome Volleyball Festival on Friday.

Grizzlies win in four

After two strong sets, Hoquiam fell behind to Toledo in the third set before rallying to win the fourth set, 25-22, 25-9, 19-25, 26-24, in this non-league match at Hoquiam Square Garden on Tuesday.

“We are very up and down,” HHS head coach Heather Bozich said. “We don’t have a lot of consistency yet. I’m OK with it, but the things we can control, we didn’t control very well. Hats off to Toledo. They were scrappy and passed the ball very well. That gave them more chances.”

Karlie Krohn led the Grizzlies with 19 digs and ReyLynn Dunn added 16 digs. Kamimi Papp hit 13 kills and Kacey Pelan finished with 20-for-21 serving and eight aces and dished out 16 assists. In the second set, Pelan served 13 straight points with six aces.

Today, Hoquiam will travel to Sam Benn Gym to take on rival Aberdeen.

Eagles sweep Bobcats

ELMA — Elma took advantage of unforced errors by Aberdeen to come away with a 3-0 (25-22, 25-17, 25-23) victory in a non-league match at Elma on Tuesday.

“We just struggled with lots of mental mistakes and unforced errors,” Aberdeen coach Doug Basler said. “We missed serves at all the wrong times. We don’t have enough firepower to give points away and we need to make them earn every point.”

Aberdeen was led by middle hitters Anna Arquette and Jillian Swor. Arquette finished with seven kills and two blocks, while Swor had six kills and three blocks. Tamara Corona had 10 digs for the Bobcats.

Aberdeen won the JV match in two sets.

Elma (1-1) will host Chehalis on Thursday, while Aberdeen (0-2) hosts Hoquiam today.

Wildcats sweep Hyaks

WESTPORT — Ocosta used consistent play to top North Beach 3-0 (25-20, 25-22, 25-19) in a non-league match at Ocosta on Tuesday.

Ocosta was led by Kaylee Barnum, who finished with 9 kills and five solo blocks in addition to being perfect in service. Erika Snider led the offense to the tune of 14 assists for the Wildcats with Layne Martin and Snider each also finishing the night 100 percent for service. Evalyn Marsh and Emily Snider each added 10 digs.

“We stayed consistent,” Ocosta coach Barbara Rasmus said. “The libero for North Beach was serving really well. We would get into a hole, but dig ourselves out again. All around, we did a really nice job.”

Ocosta won the JV match.

Ocosta (2-0) travels to Pe Ell on Thursday, while North Beach (0-2) travels to Neah Bay on Thursday.

Vikings top Fisherwomen in five

ILWACO — Willapa Valley rallied back to defeat Ilwaco 3-2 (28-26, 23-25, 18-25, 25-10, 15-7) in a non-league match on Tuesday.

After dropping the second and third sets, Valley held Ilwaco to just 17 points in the final two sets to take the match.

“It was just a great overall team win,” Valley coach Lori Snodgrass said. “All the players stepped up to do what they needed to do to get the win and the intensity level remained high.”

Valley’s Madison Huber finished with seven kills and four aces while going 39-for-42 serving the ball. Hannah Cook had eight kills, while Grace Hodel had six kills and four blocks for the Vikings.

Snodgrass also cited Abby Hodel and Katelyn McGough for solid performances and Signey Pollard for her work as setter.

The Vikings won the JV match 3-0.

Valley (2-0) hosts Raymond on Thursday.

Tigers edge Gulls

RAYMOND — Battling through five sets, Napavine edged Raymond 3-2 (25-23, 22-25, 24-26, 25-17, 15-5) in a non-league volleyball match at Raymond on Tuesday.

In a match which featured several long rallies, Raymond was up by six points in the first set before the Tigers came back to win the set. In the fifth set, Napavine grabbed the momentum early and the Seagulls couldn’t rebound.

“Napavine is one of the top teams in our district and it was good to compete against a team of that caliber,” Raymond coach Bob Swogger said. “We did play pretty well. Napavine is a really good team and I knew it was going to go either way.”

Raymond played the same six seniors, Mikayla Collins, Hailee Smith, Winter Newman, Aubree Gardner, Kendra Dunsmoor and Cydney Flemetis, throughout the contest. Smith finished with 16 kills, 36 digs and three aces, while Newman tallied 44 digs and 13 kills. Gardner ended up with 45 digs and eight kills, Collins had 24 digs, six kills and six solo blocks and Dunsmoor had 23 digs and one kill. Swogger cited Flemetis for running the offense well at setter.

Raymond (2-1) travels to Willapa Valley on Thursday.

Mules sweep Indians

WAHKIAKUM — Errors cost South Bend as Wahkiakum defeated the Indians 3-0 (25-20, 25-15, 25-23) in a non-league volleyball match on Tuesday.

“The kids played hard, but we struggled on serve-receive and serves,” South Bend coach Jackie Sanchez said. “We are missing too many serves and we need to clean up our serve-receive and we will be fine.”

The Tribe was led by Jessica Sanchez with 10 kills and seven blocks and Karley Reidinger, who finished with eight blocks, eight digs and one kill. Hannah Byington was 13-for-13 in service and led the team from the setter position.

South Bend won the JV match in two sets and split sets in the C-squad match.

South Bend (1-1) travels to Naselle on Thursday.
