Vikings 64, Hyaks 59

MENLO — Willapa Valley had a Jekyll and Hyde night, but still escaped with the win over North Beach in a Pacific 2B League game at Tenoski Gym on Monday.

The Vikings (6-7, 10-7) locked down the Hyaks defensively in first half and jumped out to a 15-point lead at halftime.

In the second half, North Beach was able to attack the Vikings grab a 1-point lead with just more than a minute to go in the contest. However, Valley’s Walker Oblad hit a 3-pointer on the next possession and give the Vikings the lead for good.

“It was the tale of two halves,” Valley coach Jay Pearson said. “The first half we played well, taking away the drive lane and holding them to 18 points. We played excellent defense the first half and it was like we checked out in the second half. We were very lucky to hang on to win it at the end.”

Oblad led the Vikings with 19 points, while Ryon Ashley and Matt Pearson each added 18 points. Chad Flemetis grabbed 11 rebounds for Valley and Ashley added 10 rebounds.

Marcus Pope scored 18 to lead the Hyaks.
