Monday Roundup: Montesano offense erupts in sweep of Hoquiam

Montesano’s offense scored over 20 runs to sweep a baseball doubleheader over Hoquiam while both the Montesano and Elma boys soccer teams won to set up a first-place showdown later this week as we take a look at Monday’s local sports action.

PREP BASEBALL

Montesano 11, Hoquiam 1

Bode Poler had a big game at the plate and Isaiah Pierce dominated on the mound as Montesano took the first game of a doubleheader against Hoquiam 11-1 Monday afternoon in Montesano.

Poler went 3-for-4 — including a solo home run in the second inning — scored three runs and drove in four to lead a Montesano offense that held a 10-1 lead at the end of the third inning.

Pierce allowed no earned runs on just two hits while striking out eight in pitching a five-inning complete game to earn the victory.

Second baseman Josh Wills went 2-for-3 with a double, two runs and two RBI while Jackson Busz went 2-for-2 with three RBI for a Monte offense that had eight hits and drew seven walks in the game

Hoquiam (1-5 overall, 0-2 1A Evergreen) scored its lone run of the game in the top of the first when second baseman Dom Standstipher, aboard with a leadoff walk, scored on a groundout by infielder Logan McMinn.

Zander Jump took the loss for Hoquiam, allowing seven earned runs on six hits with four strikeouts and three walks in two innings pitched.

Standstipher (1-1, R, BB) and Jump (1-2) were the only two Grizzlies to pick up hits off of Pierce.

Montesano 13, Hoquiam 1

Montesano’s offense continued to score in bunches in the nightcap, leading the Bulldogs to a 13-1 victory Monday evening at Vessey Field in Montesano.

Hoquiam took the lead when Kort Gordon scored on a double from outfielder Chase Schumate in the top of the second inning.

Montesano (4-1, 2-0) responded with four runs in the bottom half of the inning, two on Jackson Busz’s two-out single to score Bode Poler and Isaac Pierce.

The Bulldogs would add to its lead with an unearned run on an error in the third and broke the game wide open with eight runs in the fourth.

With Isaac Pierce aboard with a leadoff walk and Poler on with a double, Isaiah Pierce lined a double to senter to chase home his twin brother and Poler, giving Monte a 7-1 lead in the fourth.

Later in the inning, Kaleb Ames singled to score Isaiah Pierce and was followed a few batters later by a Josh Wills RBI single to make it a 10-1 ballgame.

After an Isaac Pierce bases-loaded walk drove home a run, Mason Ellis singled to drive home Pierce. Wills scored on a Hoquiam error on the play to give the Bulldogs a 13-1 lead.

That was plenty of run-support for Montesano starting pitcher Camden Taylor, who allowed one earned run on four hits in earning the five-inning victory.

Kaleb Ames led Monte’s offense, going 3-for-3 with two runs and an RBI.

Isaiah Pierce (2-2, 2B, R, 3RBI), Busz (2-2, R, 2RBI) and Wills (2-3, 2R, RBI) also had multi-hit games for a Montesano team that recorded 13 hits in the game.

Hoquiam starter Todd Mefford took the loss, allowing eight runs — seven earned — on nine hits in three innings pitched.

The two teams are scheduled to meet again at 5 p.m. on Friday at Olympic Stadium.

Aberdeen 5, Shelton 0

Aberdeen dominated from whistle to whistle in a 5-0 victory over Shelton on Monday at Shelton High School.

Aberdeen (5-1-1 overall, 2-1 2A Evergreen) scored twice in the first half on a Daniel Guzman penalty kick and a Miguel Martinez goal off a through ball from Evan Cone.

Martinez scored less than a minute into the second half off a pass from Edwin Quintana and completed a hat trick seven minutes later off a long ball from Bobcats goal keeper Antonio Granados for a 4-0 lead.

Late in the half, Guzman assisted Granados — who was moved to a forward position — on a goal in the 78th minute to complete the scoring.

“A very strong game for our team in all areas,” Aberdeen head coach Larry Fleming said. “We forced the opponent into many errors with our hustle and aggressiveness and knocked the ball around with a real purpose.”

Aberdeen outshot Shelton 16-3 in the game, with defenders Alan Avalos, Isaiah Johnson, Colby Mendoza, Gio Castillo and Hugo Garcia helping goalkeepers Axcel Garcia and Granados pick up the shutout.

Montesano remained undefeated on the season with a 6-3 1A Evergreen League win over Eatonville on Monday in Eatonville.

The Bulldogs (5-0, 4-0 1A Evergreen) were led by forward Felix Romero, who scored four goals against the Cruisers (0-4, 0-3).

Luke Clements and Raven Kinnison added a goal apiece for Montesano.

The Bulldogs will host Elma in an East County Rivalry battle for the league’s top spot at 7 p.m. on Wednesday in Montesano.

Elma 9, Hoquiam 1

Elma continued a dominant stretch against league competition with a 9-1 victory over Hoquiam on Monday in Hoquiam.

The Eagles (4-0-2 overall, 4-0 1A Evergreen) got five goals from senior Canon Seaberg and a pair of goals and two assists from senior midfielder Valencia Mendoza to win their fourth straight league game in convincing fashion.

Seaberg earned a natural hat trick in the contest, scoring the first three goals of the game in just over 20 minutes elapsed in the first half.

Elma also got goals from Cason Seaberg and Isaac Hinkle.

The Eagles have now won four straight league games, outscoring its opponents 41-2 during the streak.

Hoquiam scored a goal five minutes into the second half when Alan Ramirez cut the Eagles’ lead to 4-1.

Elma will face Montesano in a rivalry game for sole possession of first place at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Montesano.

Hoquiam will host Eatonville at 5 p.m. on Wednesday.

RSB (0-4 overall, league) scored a goal early in the first half when Edgar Ramirez threw the ball in toward Fernando Jimenez, who scored the goal.

The Ravens will look for their first win of the season when they take on Forks at 6 p.m. on Wednesday in Forks.
