Elma took an early lead and held on for a 7-4 win over Hoquiam on Monday in Hoquiam.

The Eagles (4-8 overall, 3-6 1A Evergreen) took the lead after scoring five runs in the top of the fifth, highlighted by a two-run single by Gibson Cain and an RBI double by Blake Corr to lead 5-1 heading into the third inning.

Elma padded its lead with a pair of runs in the fourth when Tiffany scored on a wild pitch followed by Cain scoring on a Corr sacrifice fly.

Hoquiam (2-12, 0-8) scored a run in the first on an error and three runs in the fifth — on an error, an RBI ground out by Kort Gordon and a passed ball — to trail 7-4 entering the sixth inning.

The Grizzlies threatened in the sixth with the bases loaded and two outs, but Elma reliever Grant Vessey struck out Mick Bozich to end the threat.

With two on and two out in the bottom of the seventh, Vessey got Hoquiam’s Dom Standstipher to ground out to Jack Alexander at shortstop to end the ballgame.

Elma used a total of five pitchers in the game, with Andrew Sanders tossing two scoreless innings to pick up the win.

Vessey earned the save, allowing no hits and no runs with three strikeouts in 1 1/3 innings of relief.

“Much better approach the plate today for us. We needed that heading into a doubleheader with Tenino tomorrow,” Elma head coach Travis Vessey said. “It was definitely a pitch by committee night for us, trying to keep guys live and ready for three more games this week.”

Tiffany (3-4, 3B, R, RBI) and Logan Skeem (3-4, 3B) had three hits apiece to lead Elma.

The Grizzlies were led by Zander Jump, who went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Elma hosts Tenino in a twin bill starting at 3 p.m. on Tuesday.
