Aberdeen 10, Hoquiam 0

A young Hoquiam squad was no match for Aberdeen as the Bobcats dominated from start to finish in a 10-0 win on Monday at Stewart Field.

Aberdeen (1-0-1 overall) scored twice in the first seven minutes of play and never looked back, dominating the field of play en route to a 4-0 halftime lead.

In the second half, the Bobcats scored on two corner-kick set pieces in the first 10 minutes of the half, with senior forward Daniel Guzman scoring both goals on headers, to go up 6-0.

Aberdeen would score four more times over the final 16 minutes of the game to earn the 10-0 victory.

Guzman led the way with two goals while Kaleb Myers, Miguel Martinez, Logan Sias, Julian Garcia, Luke Niemi, Axcel Garcia, Antonio Granados and Alan Avalos scoring a goal apiece.

Aberdeen junior midfielder Hugo Garcia had three assists to facilitate the Bobcats offense while Javier Garcia and Myers added two assists apiece.

Seven additional Bobcats tallied at least one assist for an Aberdeen offense that passed and moved the ball effectively.

“We did a great job of passing to feet and getting our heads up to pick out runners on crosses,” Aberdeen head coach Larry Fleming said. “Great overall team effort tonight.”

With just two seniors and five juniors on the team, Hoquiam (0-1) struggled to connect on its passes and execute quality first touches throughout the game, mistakes the seasoned Bobcats pounced upon.

“Tough loss tonight. We have a young team and we have work to do,” Hoquiam head coach John Johnson said. “I am pleased with the team’s overall mentality throughout the game. They stayed positive tonight and right now that is big.”

Hoquiam’s next scheduled game is against WF West at 5 p.m. on Wednesday at Olympic Stadium.

Aberdeen will host River Ridge at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.

Weather cancels Monday openers, more cancellations expected this week

Rainy weather on Monday caused delays to the opening of the 2022 baseball and softball seasons for many local teams.

Defending 1A state softball champion Montesano had its home-opener rained out as did a scheduled Myrtle Street Rivalry matchup between Hoquiam and Aberdeen’s baseball teams.

And with the local forecast showing high probabilities of more rainy weather the rest of the week, it could be several days before Twin Harbors teams take the field.
