Elma 3, Hoquiam 0

The Elma Eagles volleyball team remained undefeated in league play with a straight-set victory over Hoquiam on Monday in Elma.

Kali Rambo led the Eagles with a double-double, recording 10 kills to go along with 10 digs in Elma’s 25-14, 25-13 and 25-11.

Jalyn Sackrider had nine kills while Quin Mikel added eight kills for Elma (9-2 overall, 5-0 Evergreen 1A).

Eagles setter Ella Moore had 22 assists and the Elma defense recorded four blocks, led by Sackrider, who blocked two Grizzlies’ shots on the evening.

“We had a big night at the net, which was awesome,” Elma head coach Kendra Dunn said. “We keep improving every game and are focusing on what we need to focus on. We kept our energy high and just had fun playing.”

Hoquiam (2-10, 0-5) hosts Forks at 7 p.m. on Thursday.

Elma is one game ahead of Montesano for first place in the 1A Evergreen League and takes on the Bulldogs at 7 p.m. on Thursday in Montesano.

Centralia 3, Aberdeen 1

Despite winning its first set in a month, the Aberdeen Bobcats remained winless on the season with a 3-1 loss to Centralia on Monday in Aberdeen.

The Bobcats (0-11, 0-6 Evergreen 2A) lost the first two sets by scores of 25-14 and 25-18 before rallying to take the third set 26-24.

The set victory was the first for Aberdeen in a regular-season match since the Bobcats lost 3-1 to Hoquiam back on Sept. 19.

Centralia (3-6, 2-2) closed out the match with a 25-11 victory in the fourth set.

“We came out flat in the first game but gained some momentum in Game 2,” Aberdeen head coach Doug Basler said. “It was great to see the girls close out (Game 3) and finish. But we never got into (Game 4) and had lots of dropped balls, missed serves and unforced errors. We didn’t keep the momentum going.”

Kennedy Pruett led the Bobcats with a team-best 11 kills and Kaely Chum “showed a lot of heart out there tonight,” according to Basler.

Aberdeen hosts WF West at 7 tonight.

Ocosta 2, Life Christian 1 (Ocosta 4-3 penalty kicks)

With the game at her foot, Ocosta’s Kianna Battiste came through to provide the Wildcats with a 2-1 win over Life Christian on Monday, winning 4-3 on penalty kicks.

Ocosta (8-5-1, 5-2 Pacific 2B) opened the scoring when Miki Ness scored off a cross from Katelynn Denny in the 38th minute.

But a bit of bad luck bit the Wildcats after the half when Life Christian (2-10, 2-5) scored when a corner kick went off an Ocosta player for an own-goal, tying the game at 1-1 in the 59th minute.

The game remained tied over the final 20 minutes and overtime, despite Ocosta’s offense peppering the Eagles’ goal with 11 shots during that span.

With Life Christian up 1-0 in the penalty-kick shootout, Ocota’s Trinity White scored and was followed by Wildcats keeper Devyn Martin making a save on the Eagles’ subsequent try. Denny then converted to give the Wildcats a 2-1 shootout lead.

The Eagles’ next shot was good, followed by an off-target shot from Ocosta.

Life Christian scored to take a 3-2 lead, but Ocosta’s Maia Soderlund scored to tie up the shootout a 3-3.

The fifth Eagles’ attempt sailed over the crossbar, setting up Battiste for a potential game-winner. The senior fullback stepped up and nailed her shot into the back of the net to give Ocosta a 4-3 shootout victory.

The Wildcats dominated play, outshooting Life Christian 34-15.

Martin made eight saves for Ocosta, which got excellent defensive games by Battiste and Soderlund, according to Wildcats head coach Mike King.

Ocosta sits in a three-way tie for third place with Onalaska and Toledo.

The Wildcats take on first-place Adna at 6 tonight at Adna High School.

Grays Harbor Hawks advance to state tournament

The Grays Harbor Hawks placed second in the D division of the Special Olympics Flag Football Regional Tournament on Sunday at Renton Memorial Stadium.

The Hawks played two games on Sunday. In the first game, Grays Harbor quarterback Isaac Talbot threw three touchdown passes to receiver Cord Reeves to lead the Hawks to a 35-26 victory over the Wild Dogs and a spot in the championship game later that day.

Talbot tossed three more TDs in the regional-title game, but Grays Harbor fell to the Metro Parks Thunder Hawks in a see-saw 26-20 loss.

Talbot went 12-for-25 with three interceptions and TD passes to Reeves, Zachary Fitzgerald and Leon Robertson

Grays Harbor will compete in the state tournament Nov. 22-24 in Pasco.
