Monday Prep Roundup: Ancich leads Aberdeen to third-place finish in league championships

Charlie Ancich had the third-best round of the day to lead the Aberdeen Bobcats to a third-place finish at the 2A Evergreen Conference championship meet on Monday at the Riverside Golf Course in Chehalis.

Ancich played consistent, steady golf in the sub-district meet, leading the field with a 39 on the front-9 followed by a 38 on the back stretch for a total score of 77.

The Aberdeen sophomore birdied the par-5 14th hole and finished just two shots behind league champion Ben Halverstadt of WF West and a stroke behind runner-up Cole Watson of Centralia.

“What a great round for Charlie. He has been waiting for this type of game all season,” Aberdeen head coach Dan Sundstrom said. “Now is a perfect time to be playing his best golf.”

Aberdeen’s Logan Seguin finished in 10th place with a round of 83 with Trevon Nichols (89) and Baylor Ainsworth (89) finishing in a tie for 16th place. Hunter Eisele placed 30th with a round of 105.

As a team, Aberdeen finished third in the league with 88 points.

WF West won the league title with 119 points with Tumwater taking second with 107 points.

Aberdeen competes in the 15-team 2A District 4 meet beginning at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Riverside Golf Course.

Aberdeen at sub-districts Monday

Two Aberdeen doubles teams will play each other Tuesday with a chance to go to next week’s district tournament.

The Bobcats duo of Colton Faulkner/Ashdon Swope and Andrew Troeh/Kyle Miller won their respective matches in the 2A Evergreen Conference sub-district tournament on Monday in Tumwater.

Faulker and Swope defeated a WF West paring 6-0, 6-1 with Troeh and Miller taking care of a Black Hills duo 6-0, 6-0.

The two Bobcats teams will play each other today with a spot in the district tournament on the line.

Singles — Tanner Brewer (Tumwater 2) defeated Foster Patterson (Aberdeen 1) 6-4, 3-6, (10-6); Kevin Eng (Aberdeen 2) won first round match via forfeit. Joshua Brennan (Shelton 2) def. Kevin Eng 6-0, 6-2; Andrew Boggess (WFW3) def. Kevin Eng 6-1, 6-0.
