Mariners release schedule for shortened 2020 season

SEATTLE — The Seattle Mariners released their 2020 schedule Monday, which begins July 24 on the road at Minute Maid Park in Houston.

Seattle’s shortened 60-game season opens with a seven-game road trip against the Astros and Angels.

The Mariners return to T-Mobile Park for their home opener against Oakland on July 31, and host the A’s, Angels and Rockies in a 10-game homestand before hitting the road again.

Fans will not be allowed at the ballpark per Gov. Jay Inslee’s COVID-19 recovery plan, which does not permit large gatherings until Phase 4. King County is currently in a modified version of Phase 2.

The Mariners will play 40 games against division rivals in the American League West during the shortened season, and 20 against teams in their geographical counterpart in the NL West.

Seattle will play 10 games each against the A’s, Angels, Astros and Rangers, six games against their Vedder Cup rivals the Padres, four each against the Dodgers and Giants, and three apiece against the Diamondbacks and Rockies.

The Mariners will host every opponent on their schedule except the Diamondbacks at least once.

Most home games begin at 6:10 p.m. or 6:40 p.m. PST — earlier than the 7:10 p.m. starts during normal seasons — with afternoon games sprinkled in to accommodate travel.

The Mariners have off days on Aug. 13 and 24, and Sept. 10, 14, 17 and 24.

Per new Major League Baseball rules, both AL and NL teams will use a designated hitter in all parks, pitchers who enter the game must face three batters at minimum and each half-inning of all extra-innings games will begin with a runner on second base.

Five teams from each league will advance to the postseason.
