Local Roundup: Montesano sweeps team titles at Snohomish weightlifting meet

Montesano won both the men’s and women’s team titles as the Harbor was well represented at the Iron Club Snohomish High School Powerlifting Meet on Saturday in Snohomish.

Montesano’s boys powerlifting team scored 41 points, three points better than second-place Shelton.

Monte was led by Nathan Moua’s victory in the 123-pound class by lifting a total of 725 points and a 220-pound class victory from Logan Roberts, pushing up a total of 1,240 pounds.

In the women’s team competition, Montesano placed first with 32 points, beating Olympia by eight points.

Hailey McElroy won the 114-pound weight class with 535 pounds with Monte teammate Hannah Bruland claiming the 165-pound class with an even 700 pounds lifted.

Aberdeen’s Iris Singleton had an excellent performance on Saturday, winning the 148-pound class with 785 pounds lifted, earning the Bobcat standout the title of Female Lifter of the Meet.

Montesano 4, Tenino 1

Montesano continued its march toward the first league title in program history with a 4-1 victory over Tenino on Monday in Montesano.

The Bulldogs (9-1 overall, 8-0 1A Evergreen) benefited from a Tenino own goal in the seventh minute and – after the Beavers (5-6, 5-4) got a goal from Tyler Minerich in the 15th minute – closed the first half up 2-1 when Mateo Sanchez scored off a feed from Levi Clements in the 26th minute.

“In the first half, it was difficult to get going,” Montesano head coach Fidel Sanchez said, eluding to improved play from the Beavers. “Tenino was determined and better organized than when we previously played them.”

In the second half, Felix Romero scored off an assist from Sanchez in the 50th minute and Cristofer Tobar converted on a penalty kick in the 69th minute to secure Monte’s 4-1 victory.

Montesano had 20 shots to just four for the Beavers, with 11 shots on target.

With the victory, the Bulldogs hold a two-game lead over Eatonville for the top spot in the 1A Evergreen League.

Montesano plays at Forks at 6 p.m. on Wednesday.
