PREP VOLLEYBALL

Hoquiam 3, Tenino 1

The Hoquiam Grizzlies stayed hot, winning for the ninth time in their last 10 games with a 3-1 victory over Tenino on Tuesday at Tenino High School.

Hoquiam (11-4 overall, 7-0 1A Evergreen) matched the intensity of Tenino (8-7, 3-4) after dropping the first set 25-22 to sweep the next three games by scores of 25-16, 25-17 and 25-17.

“They gave us all we could handle,” Hoquiam head coach Heather Bozich said of the victory. “They are so scrappy and never give up on a ball, which made us really have to step up our game and play more aggressively.”

Hoquiam setter Katlyn Brodhead finished the match with 42 assists and went 21-for-22 (95.5%) from the service line. She wasn’t the only Grizzly player to have a strong performance on Tuesday.

Middle blocker Kristina Goulet continued her stellar senior season by leading the Grizzlies with 17 kills while senior outside hitter Faith Prosch found the floor for 11 kills.

“I thought we played great after the first set, passing extremely well,” Bozich said. “Because of our passing we were able to stay in system and Katlyn Brodhead ran a great offense.”

Junior middle blocker Hayden Brook-Andrew also had double-digit kills with 10 to go along with a team-best five blocks.

Sophomore libero Lexi LaBounty led the Hoquiam defense with 47 digs and committed just two dig errors in the match.

“Overall, I like how we adjusted after the first set and played with a lot more hustle and heart,” Bozich said.

With the win, the Grizzlies remain just one game behind Montesano for the top spot in the 1A Evergreen League.

The Grizzlies and Bulldogs are set to face off with a league title on the line in the regular-season finale at 7 p.m. Thursday at Hoquiam Square Garden.

GIRLS PREP SOCCER

Aberdeen 3, Shelton 1

Aberdeen earned a key league victory in the final week of the regular season with a 3-1 win over Shelton on Tuesday at Stewart Field in Aberdeen.

The Bobcats (8-6, 7-4 2A Evergreen) got on the board first when senior defender Esmerelda Vega sent a long ball forward to senior striker Annie Troeh, who raced approximately 55 yards for a breakaway goal in the 15th minute.

Shelton (3-11-1, 2-9) scored 10 minutes later on a long shot that skipped off the turf and into the net, but Aberdeen quickly responded when a free kick from Troeh found the head of Abby Mainio, who flicked the ball past the Highclimbers keeper for a 2-1 lead in the 31st minute.

Leading 2-1 in the second half, Aberdeen center defender Scotlyn Lecomte chipped a ball in from 20-yards out for the 3-1 final score.

“Our defense was excellent for the most part and our possession was better this game,” Aberdeen head coach Larry Fleming said.

Aberdeen recognized its seniors and exchange students for Senior Night. Esmerelda Vega, Aliyah Burkett, Valeria Parra, Jaylynn Phimmasone, Zoe Troeh, Chiara Banfi, Madison Marlow and Annie Troeh were honored as part of the festivities.

The victory was huge for Aberdeen as the Bobcats moved into a tie for second place with W.F. West and hold a one-game lead over Centralia in the 2A Evergreen Conference with one game left in the regular season.

“This gives us a chance to finish in second place and get to host for districts instead of traveling,” Fleming said.

Aberdeen closes out the regular season at 7 p.m. on Thursday in Centralia.

The Bobcats junior varsity team tied 0-0 against Shelton JV on Tuesday.

Joie Mayberry, Kenia Mendoza Hernandez and Sawyer Shoemaker were credited by the Bobcats coaching staff for playing well for Aberdeen.
