Aberdeen 4, Kelso 0
Aberdeen earned a key early-season win with a 4-0 victory over 3A-class Kelso on Saturday at Kelso High School.
The Bobcats (2-0 overall) and Hilanders (0-1) were locked in a scoreless tie through much of the first half as offensive opportunities from each team were turned away by sound opposition defenses and goalkeeping.
Aberdeen broke through in the 37th minute when a cross from senior striker Marc Avila got through the teeth of the Kelso defense and found the foot of senior midfielder Luis Campos for a 1-0 lead.
In the second half, Aberdeen continued to apply pressure deep inside the Kelso final third of the pitch with what Cats head coach Larry Fleming said were “terrific chances.”
Aberdeen doubled its lead when junior Cristhian Lopez and senior defender Trino Villar assisted on a goal by Avila in the 63rd minute.
The Bobcats extended the lead to 3-0 when Villar took an Avila pass and beat both a Kelso defender and goalkeeper for a goal in the 68th minute.
Avila closed out the scoring with a goal off an assist by sophomore defender Ricky Granados with eight minutes left to play.
“An excellent team win for the boys,” said Fleming, who commended the play of Avila, Granados, Lopez and senior defender Angel Espinoza. “It was great to see them control the ball and pass effectively today.”
Aberdeen’s junior varsity team won 5-0 on Saturday.
Ben Garcia had a hat trick with Emilio Lopez and Gerardo Servellon also scoring a goal in the Bobcats JV win.
Aberdeen’s Jackson Hinkley and Josh Alcala were cited by Bobcats JV coach Luis Soto for “strong games,” with Wyatt Glaefke and Brennan Cone sharing the goalkeeping duties to earn the shutout.
Aberdeen takes on 3A-class Mountain View at 6 p.m. on Friday at Mountain View High School.

PREP BASEBALL
Overlake 9, Montesano 7
A late rally by Montesano fell short in a 9-7 loss to Overlake on Saturday at Shelton High School.
The Bulldogs (1-1) were locked in a scoreless battle with the Owls (2-0) through the first three innings of play and were tied 1-1 heading into the top of the fifth.
A Monte error gave Overlake a 2-1 lead and was followed later in the frame by an RBI sacrifice fly from Max Bieber to put the Bulldogs in a 3-1 hole.
The Owls scored six runs in the top of the seventh without a base hit as Monte’s defense unraveled. The Bulldogs committed four errors, five wild pitches and two walks to face a 9-1 hole entering the bottom of the seventh.
Monte rallied as the Owls defense had problems of its own. Five walks followed by an RBI single by Caden Grubb and a two-run single by first baseman Kole Kjesbu trimmed the deficit to 9-7 with two outs and the tying run on first base.
But Monte’s Mason Fry struck out and was thrown out at first on a dropped third strike to end the game.
Grubb took the loss, allowing four runs – one earned – on five hits and three walks with five strikeouts in six innings pitched.
Monte’s offense managed just three hits in the game – two from Grubb – but drew eight walks by Owls pitching.
The Bulldogs defense committed eight errors in the game, leading to eight unearned runs for Overlake.
