VISTA, Calif. — A Vista judge declared a mistrial on eight counts in the case of ex-NFL player Kellen Winslow II, who was accused of committing several sex crimes against women in North County last year, including rape.

The jury returned verdicts Monday on four counts, including the rape of a 58-year-old homeless woman in Encinitas and misdemeanor charges of indecent exposure and committing a lewd act related to two other victims —one a woman age 57 at the time, the other age 77.

Jurors acquitted him on a second count of committing a different lewd act.

The jury indicated Monday afternoon that they were deadlocked on the remaining counts, but Vista Superior Court Judge Blaine Bowman had ordered the panel to keep deliberating that day and to come back to court Tuesday.

Shortly after 10 a.m., the jurors sent a note to the judge, saying they remained deadlocked on counts including kidnap for rape, rape of an unconscious person and willful cruelty to an elder. Bowman then declared the mistrial on those counts and dismissed the panel.

The jurors declined to speak to reporters after they were excused from the courtroom.

The defendant, a one-time Pro Bowl player, is the son of Chargers tight end and Hall of Famer Kellen Winslow.
